Yeah, that's right. And on top of that, he received co-writer credit (with creator Veena Sud) on the series finale.

I mean... he's a legitimately good writer, based on the critical and (relative) commercial success of his first novel, and I don't think the problems with the show are by any means his fault (I blame that entirely on Sud's rudderless direction)... but, man, now he might have "Worst season finale of all time" attached to his name.

My main beef with the way grantland is using them is they should be paranthetical asides (and even then, a good editor would just scrap 70% of them because the anecdotes aren't that interesting and the jokes aren't that funny). It totally ruins the flow of the piece because you have to shift focus across the page, then go back and find your place. And then I re-read the last sentence or two to figure out what the hell is going on.
Agreed.

They're trying to re-invent the wheel with that ****. How about you just write better. You'll earn respect and a large following that way? Trying to too hard looks like another Simmons MO.

I see what KC is saying - and for a scholarly-type paper he'd be right - but I kind of like the footnotes as Simmons et al use them. In the Book of Basketball and The Undisputed Guide to Pro Basketball, for example, they're a great way to add "did you know?" type trivia without interrupting the flow of the paper. I usually read them at the end of the paragraph which helps to not lose your place. I'll concede that Simmons probably uses them more than he should but there's enough good tidbits to make up for the bad.

yeah, I've read a bit of this book and it works there, because they're largely used as academic footnotes, with Simmons signature smart ass wit thrown in for good measure. Not that it's some scholarly history text, but it's a history book nonetheless, and the footnotes, for the most part, add interesting anecdotes about what's being covered.

What I don't need is this:

1 my wife calls him Jacoby, the guy on 1/3rd of my podcasts. lol.
2 he was like lol wtf

And in Molly Lambert's latest piece about some chick I've heard of, one of her footnotes is literally "you know what I'm talking about." Yeah, I do, so don't ****ing footnote it.

Rock VORP

How important is Albert Hammond Jr. to the Strokes? Grantland does the math.
I'm just not going to bother.

I can think of at least two reasons that column would have been much better in 2002.

I don't think I've ever seen a more disinterested band than the leather jacket-clad strokes performing at Jazz Fest when it was 90 degrees out. I left to go watch Lauryn Hill and ultimately Jimmy Buffet both of whom were much better even though Hill was pregnant.

Try to come up with an argument that that column works better today than it would have ten years ago. You can't.

Is it just me or does Deadspin seem weirdly jealous of this new site?

Well, one of their boys had a job offer rescinded after not sufficiently kissing the ring, so it's possible. Haven't been reading Deadspin though.

The Strokes aren't flashy in this context and will look absolutely disinterested if the sun is still out. If they're playing outdoors after the sun is down or in a stadium it's truly a great show though.

I like Klosterman but that article was pathetic. "Rank my favorite classic rock & indie bands, with lol's mixed in more frequently the lower you go."

He should've just limited it to an indepth analysis of Mick Taylor v Ron Wood v Brian Jones, which would've interested a handful of folks, had the VORP stuff as a footnote, and finished up with an "if your interested here's my fave bands!" link.

Ford podcast was OK, tho they lost complete track of doing their mock due to Simmons' endless "No, wait, the Jazz should make THIS trade for Jimmer."

I am honestly shocked someone likes the Japandroids that much. I like them, you could almost call them local as they still play every dive hall/"venue" in Canada three times a year, but they have to be 1000x less popular then any band around them on that list.

Al is personable and a great interview. Chuck is not a great interviewer though. Disappointingly short for a Simmons cast too.
