Neil Payne doubling down on his dislike of Wiggins.

Who is giving a counter-argument that uses advanced metrics to support Wiggins as a future star?

Simmons' latest Grantland piece on Duncan is self-indulgent bilge, whipped up around exactly nothing. Manu may be retiring, but Duncan sure isn't.

the Grantland Summer Movie Previews are coming out. Always enjoy Simmons and Connelly discussion... but man, i absolutely despise Wesley Morris. I can't stand the guy's voice and opinions, it's crazy.

carry on

BIll SImmons to leave ESPN, according to ESPN president John Skipper. "We weren't going to get to the terms," said Skipper.

“I decided today that we are not going to renew Bill Simmons’ contract. We have been in negotiations and it was clear it was time to move on. ESPN’s relationship with Bill has been mutually beneficial - he has produced great content for us for many years and ESPN has provided him many new opportunities to spread his wings. We wish Bill continued success as he plans his next chapter. ESPN remains committed to Grantland and we have a strong team in place.”

oh man that's a gangster move. Give him free reign to build up a brand but keep the brand. Kinda surprised Simmons didn't have some clause regarding Grantland.

Maybe they can get Whitlock to run the white grantland as well.

NBC Sports and Yahoo are about to have a bidding war.

would he go the yahoo route or does he really want to work somewhere that has nba tv rights?

I could see him trying to pitch NBA.com as giving him a ton of room to work and letting him pretend he can host an NBA tv show on nbatv.

But man, he had his hands in a lot of other stuff (30 for 30).. I guess he would want a bigger space than just NBA.

Will ESPN will hold on to Grantland forever and allow it to be a perennial loser, or admit it just burns cash and shudder it eventually?

This will be a great test case to see if anyone can move the needle on ratings/page views, or if the ESPN machine just trumps it all.

Let's say he decided to go with the monthly subscription model. Could he pull in 75k-100k+ people for $5-$10 a month? Is his fan base that loyal?

I wonder what the contracts of the various Grantland folks look like. If Simmons starts something new can/will they bolt there and how quickly will that happen.

As long as he brings Lowe with him this isn't a bad idea

Yeah, the issues with each is that Yahoo has no rights and no TV while NBC effectively has nowhere to write online (although they definitely have the resources to create that).

NBC seems to have done a pretty good job of letting Men in Blazers do MiB-y things, which is promising.

From knowing a guy who worked at nba.com for while, I doubt he'd go the NBA TV route, but definitely possible. Certainly BS would get way more flexibility to do what he wants than a random dude, so corporate structure and willingness to try new things wouldn't be an issue.
