Yes, this is a perfect example of what Krayz is talking about. Without opening a whole other debate, you can find examples of those guys taking an intellectually lazy approach to subject matter outside their expertise, compounded by the fact that they clearly consider themselves so rational and brilliant that they can't even believe they have blind spots, let alone attempt to correct them.

I'm very familiar with Dawkins' behavior in this regard, but I'm not as familiar with Harris. I've been pretty impressed with his work that I've seen, but I'd be interested to see examples of his lazy behavior outside of his expertise area.

FWIW, I heard about his appearance on Real Time but haven't seen it and some dude on my facebook says harris is a huge, hardcore zionist, which seems pretty incongruous with what else I've seen from him.

His views on religions are pretty nutty. I know my philosophy profs at Pitt (top 10 in the country) were pretty disdainful of him. He definitely knows 1 billion times more than Dawkins though.

I am admittedly more familiar with Dawkins than Harris as well and may be being unfair to him. That said, the Real Time appearance and the various responses to it make me think he might be one of those guys. If he were in fact a hardcore Zionist that would support the case (and also explain his Islamophobia).

Omg, I'm 2 minutes in and it's #notagoodlook for maher and harris. cliffnotes so far, "there are some bad muslims, therefore we can conclude islam (and muslims in general) is terrible"

Also, "Islam is the only religion that encourages fanatical violence"

Tell that to George Tiller's family

Israel is the only topic I've ever seen that can make an intelligent, rational man argue like a woman.

Yes, in a discussion about intellectuals I am defintely sensitively inclusive of bojangling sportswriters.

Really enjoyed this. I've always been a massive Gammons fanboy, but a lack of basketball enthusiasm meant I wasn't exposed to Bob Ryan until his TV days. Gave me a greater appreciation (though I already liked him):

I'm male, so it may not be fair, but I don't disagree with any Grantland contributor more than... honestly, i don't even know if it's Emily Yoshida or Tess Lynch. Maybe I'm the tonedeaf one, but she's almost always wrong about public perception it seems. She says things that just flat aren't true. ... I think it's Yoshida.

like for instance, she could just come out and make a comment like "i feel like people hated Seinfeld." she's always wrong, and i keep listening b/c there's always one topic i want to hear people talk about on their stupid podcast. Also, her critiques always annoy the crap out of me.

this is all.

It's been a little over two weeks, I think, but I'm measuring time in "Barnwell Friday Picks Columns".

Any predictions re: how Bill will address the whole thing? Surely he won't just pick things up acting like nothing happened but I have no idea what angle he'll take..

I actually think that's the most likely scenario. He challenged them and got spanked. No winning in his position, time to move along to other topic matter.

Yeah, I expect his return article to be a picks and mailbag next week or something similar.

Yeah maybe. Just think his ego won't allow him to not address it in some fashion but he may have been ordered to let it go.

if he does a mailbag, expect a ton of subtle jabs disguised as pop culture references. or allusions to nba suspensions, etc. he's not going quietly
