Simmons is (or maybe was, before today) pretty much widely regarded as the single most powerful person at espn.

Whatever credibility ESPN had as a journalistic entity was blown to shreds by taking down the Ombudsman piece. Not to mention how stupid it is to think that taking something down makes it go away; if anything, it'll get more coverage.

This sort of thing makes me want a la carte cable channels even more.

ESPN would have much less money and influence if they couldn't strong-arm providers into carrying 4 channels.

This as well, but it definitely gets dismissed immediately by any judge given how difficult it is for a public figure to collect on a defamation suit. I really can't imagine that fear of litigation factored into this in any significant way at all. It really has to mostly be about taking his dick out and trying to publicly assert leverage over/immunity with his employer.

Don't kid yourself. Simmons started w/ a blog on AOL back in the day. He's far more influential than you think he is.

I read part of a deadspin piece awhile back that mentioned the higher ups in the company were aware of this perception and didnt like it. Probably played a role in the length of the suspension id imagine.

Never comes to that.

ESPN gonna eat their balls here. Simmons will repentantly accept a reduced sentence and ESPN will give him a bunch of behind the scenes goodies.

FWIW lots of different media people are saying that a bunch of blogs are down at ESPN. Not just the ombuds column.

surely nobody can be that ****ing idiotic in this day and age to hand over full rights, unless he got paid a **** ton upfront

Simmons has said he wants to be with whoever gets the NBA TV rights in 2016. Whether that is ESPN, Fox or whatever

Yeah, there's literally zero chance Simmons doesn't either a) start a new site right away or b) get snapped up for an outrageous salary by CBS, Fox, etc. unless he's got some kind of non-compete in his contract (because GL getting him to sign one now).

TD,

literally 0% chance of that happening.

I can't imagine this to be the case anymore. I check espn.com once a day to see if someone has killed someone overnight. I check grantland for content all day long. Though it would be interesting to find out from all of this who owns what.

I mean yes he's another ******ed Boston fan but you have to respect how he made himself into a massive media icon from basically just a blogger without changing.
