LA is easily the most maddening place I have ever had to endure either driving or as a passenger.

I think every city considers itself the worst though.

Yup.

"So you're saying these aren't the decaying ruins of New York in the year 4000?"
"You wish. You're in Los Angeles!"
"But there was this gang of 10-year-olds with guns."
"Exactly, you're in L.A."
"But everyone is driving around in cars shooting at each other."
"That's L.A. for you."
"But the air is green and there's no sign of civilization whatsoever."
"He just won't stop with the social commentary."
"And the people are all phonies. No one reads. Everything has cilantro on it..."

I spend a sad amount of time in LA. Part of it is that there are so many miles that any jam just seems interminable. Another part is that every single four wheeler seems to think they are an expert merger, despite having every rule or principle in their head the exact opposite of correct.

Yes, tons. In fact, only a small percentage of residents drive more than once per month, if at all. And yet, the streets are still inexplicably packed with cars such that congestion on large streets is common. It's the darndest thing.

I mean, it's just a thing every truck driver needs to be prepared for in Los Angeles: each car merging onto a freeway plans to find a semi with maximum space in front and behind, and match the semi's speed with their back bumper on the same line as the truck's front. When the truck does not slam on the brakes, the procedure is to continue merging anyway, coming as close to making physical contact as possible, then rolling down the window to shake their fist or give the bird, before flooring it and putting a half mile of space between the car and the truck within 1.5 seconds time. Apparently, accelerating in the acceleration lane results in forfeiture of car and license in LA County.

yeah, i mean it all depends, some of the outer boroughs have a more of a suburbsy feel where driving might be more needed. but the typical Manhattan resident really doesn't need a car ever. Our family didn't have a car from when I was in about 1st through 8th grade and it really didn't affect us all that much. I didn't have my license for a long time, mostly due to laziness but I never really needed it. One of my friends is 33 and doesn't have his license, and the people I know who live in Manhattan have their license but don't really own or need cars for the most part.

Manhattan is really the only borough you can get away with not driving IMO

Obviously it's possible in the others, but quite inconvenient and -lifeEV

I've lived in DC, NYC and LA and they are all bad in different ways. That said, LA is the worst by a pretty comfortable margin. Just pure ****ing misery.

The full-speed zipper merge for a lane closure, right at the edge of the closure so everyone just has to behave rationally, my god...the things we miss when we leave.

yeah ****ing truckers do this in ga/tn too. so many of these ****ing things everywhere in every lane. traffic is ****ing awful here. trying to merge on the interstate and the slapdicks don't slow down or get into another lane. keep plowing through leaving me unable to get on the damn interstate. have to slow down to a screeching halt.

<3 you pc hopefully you're not driving on the east coast.

Around here, I swear they do speed up or slow down...to match your speed and block access to the interstate! But not just trucks, friggin' ALL drivers! One of the main reasons I went with a turbo.

yeah when i lived in brooklyn i didn't have a car.

reasons it sucked:

- grocery shopping is like a 3 times a week affair, and technically more if you're a person who deludes themselves into thinking they're going to eat well in the daytime at the grocery store but then really needs horrible, fat person snacks at 11 pm (never got grocery delivery either, just seemed like a luxury)

- getting to anything not directly covered by bus or subway in NYC is awful and circuitous

- getting out of the city at all REALLY sucks

but not having to worry about where i'm parking, could i get a ticket, could my car get hit and run (have seen this happen twice), well worth it.

LOLLLLLLLLLLL

If I'm not mistaken, those in Manhattan who don't drive do it for some combination of a few reasons:

1) They don't need a car, or at least don't see the need for a car.
2) They aren't willing to pay for expensive real estate to store a car.
3) They aren't good at "dealing with the complexities of NYC driving".

So people who are rich might be willing to deal with #2 as long as #1 and #3 go away. With driverless cars, people like Gilbert Gottfried won't have to worry about driving in a city with nothing but crazy, professional drivers. He also might enjoy riding out to Jersey or Long Island without having to hire a limo or sit in a yellow car with a smelly immigrant.

I'm assuming dnh meant Manhattan when he said "NYC", since others have said that it's less optimal to not have a car in other boroughs.

Not sure if having extra people like Gilbert Gottfried out clogging traffic so he can drive to the dollar store is +EV for Manhattan but individuals may enjoy getting around without having to hire a driver.
