That's cool. Do they give you breaks in between each movie for bathroom and such? I figure they should, because they probably would make more money selling food and drink. Does it end so TDKR starts at midnight for you?

Mainly the part about the show being better than the books and the books not being very good in general, not really sure how you can defend that without resorting to contrarian hipster tryhardism

Please, it's snobby elitism.

The shortest, least spoilery answer possible is that the books needed more editing badly- and the show has made a lot of those edits. Broadly the books sprawl and lack direction and focus. Specifically Martin is an overly and unnecessarily descriptive writer with the maturity and restraint of a 13 year old. (the first book is very good, but around 4-5 it's a damn mess).

Again, very entertaining, but also very flawed, especially the later books.

Green is probably true (though I liked 4-5 more than most), red is completely false and suggests to me that you don't like reading. His descriptions are great for building the world from the ground up, developing the characters, and creating a sense of pacing. Without that you're left with nonstop action and plotting, and a much less fulfilling experience overall. In other words, you're left with the show.

I like reading fine- but there's nothing about getting into the specifics of every piece of somebody's armor that moves the story forward. I agree he's good at world building and character development, but he also gets lost in unnecessary details. When the plot just stops so somebody can describe everybody's outfit down to the armor nipples, that's not (to me) good storytelling.

You've just described Melville and, more specifically, some of the chapters in Moby Dick.

And Moby Dick, while a fantastic novel, is also famously dull at points.

the books do get pretty crappy later in the series. hopefully the show can cut out a bunch of the filler but dids is acting like he's already seen seasons 3-5 and knows that they are significant improvements on the source material.

No, I think there have already been big improvements (the added emphasis on Tywin for instance, and a lot of the stuff they trimmed out) already. If you wanted to go back through the threads in OOTV you could find plenty of examples where I've pointed those out.

When not going slow is one of the major things going for the series, that's a problem.

I thought book 1 was pretty good, books 2 and 3 were really enjoyable, and find 4 and 5 almost completely forgettable. Martin sure seems to be suffering from a bad case of Robert Jordan-itis in terms of the direction the series is going.
