Eh, I don't really agree - OOT used to be a much bigger mixed bag. I know I disagreed with you about OOT traffic once then looked up the numbers - it was huge. Threads that lasted for 50 posts were 'epic'. But a lot of threads were just TRs, or diebitter's advice, or totally forgettable. Still, what was sort of mindblowing about OOT was that it was a repository of weird information - where else would one read about sandwich flipping? Or a TR about a Japanese toilet? At its best, it was a discussion of things that I seldom heard people talk about. Mods, seeing that there were good threads and bad threads, decided to try to regulate the bad threads by locking them, chastised new posters, and basically tried to keep OOT the way they remembered it in their heads, without the terrible posts. Then a bunch of new forums were created to house goofier stuff and OOT became the joyless uncle of the 2p2 hangout forums.
But I don't think there's much to be done - mostly I just think there isn't a new stream of users. Back in 2004, people new to Internet posting could be anywhere from 16 to 40 or even older. But now it's basically going to be college kids or younger. Who would look at SE with its 30 threads almost all of which are hundreds of pages long and think 'yeah, this is a good place to post?' Same goes for OOT, really.
