Taking the subway is also much less expensive, so there's that. The subway has its ups and downs, but driving oftentimes blows, especially in cities where that's the only option.

Also, you can't very easily take 10 minutes and go pick up food and bring it back because you have to either walk to somewhere nearby (thereby limiting your choices significantly)

order delivery (thereby increasing cost and still limiting choices), or take a subway/cab. It is also an absolute nightmare to go shopping anywhere that will lead to a purchase of stuff that is more than you can comfortably carry. Its basically impossible to go buy a liquor and a few cases of beer without 2 friends coming with you. Forget about going to the grocery store or costco unless you plan to go everyday.
You should be humming the Star Spangled Banner after this post.

Cabs are standard when you drink, but you cant argue that driving is inarguably more comfortable and faster if you have any sort of parking and roads that are sufficient to accomodate the population.
I can and do. No roads are sufficient to accommodate population - it's basically a given that in all cities where mass transit is a joke, traffic is a daily nightmare (LA, Houston, Phoenix, Atlanta).

traffic in ATL is better than traffic in NYC in my experience. Its basically impossible to drive in NYC and traffic laws are loosely obeyed on a good day. Also, when people say ATL is sprawled theyre including the suburbs. NYC is sprawled too if you include NJ and CT as part of the "city." I am able to get everywhere I need to go in ATL (about a 10 mi radius) in 15 min or less. I can get to work in 7 min in the morning despite it being 2.5 mi away. Mass transit is nice when drinking (but it seems to close too early to be usable most of the time anyways and a cab in NYC is harder to get than one in ATL). Why would anyone prefer to take a subway to work instead of driving? It makes no sense.
Again, driving is much more expensive, but even leaving that aside, it's not impossible to drive in NYC (I do it all the time). When I say ATL is sprawled, I am talking about just the city of Atlanta, as I've visited that city twice and I don't think I've ever been outside of Atlanta proper. LOL @ a cab being harder to get in NYC than ATL. Obviously this is true when it's raining or if you're in a packed bar district; taxi-type apps have made it easier to get cabs in non-NYC cities, I imagine, but if any of these things are not true, I'd much rather just hail a random cab. On a subway, you can read, you don't have to deal with the hassle of driving, you get to experience things that are outside the protective bubble of existence that you erect when you're in a car. I'm not saying the subway is superior - it isn't - but it's also cheaper and it's pretty awesome sometimes.
