Arsenal chairman Peter Hill-Wood has dropped a strong hint that star striker Robin van Persie could be for sale if the price is right.

Anyone else heard this?

It's pretty obvious. The 'right price' basically means whatever they think the difference will be between increased performance and revenue next season with him staying and leaving on a free, against predicted monies next season and beyond by selling him now and getting a replacement.

Arsenal have always tried to make shrewd business decisions when it comes to transfers. They will know exactly what price makes sense to sell, and anything under that it won't happen.

Sends a bad signal in my mind though. Obviously there are economics at work, but having your star and captain committing is pretty important too.

Could be decided a week or two early if the dutch get ko'ed

They've all been running with it for a week. Maybe if they run slower the clubs involved will actually catch up with it.

Elsewhere:

Quote from Robin Van Persie's dad Bob today in the Sunday Times (online edition is behind a paywall so I can't link it) "He'd never go to Manchester City as it's impossible he would play for another Premier League side that wasn't Arsenal."

One thing that is becoming apparent to me that somehow I had not processed before is that Modric is a lot better defensively than I had previously thought.

He has always been very good defensively. He cuts out a ton of passes and just knows how to harass people in general. It's somewhat related to how he is so good on the ball and comes up with great passes (imo). He is just a great reader of the game and that manifests itself in many ways. This is just another one.

Yea its so obvious that I am wondering why I had not really noticed it before. Concentrating to much on the sexy passes imo.

Makes me much more comfortable playing him in a double pivot with Mikel if we were to have a FB3 of Hulk Mata and Hazard. More comfortable does not equal totally convinced and whatever is probably a purely academic exercise as I dont think we will be landing Modric.

Someone refresh my memory, did Chelsea have a 40 million bid rejected for Modric last summer, or was 40 million Spurs' valuation of him?

Got no source to back it up but I'm pretty sure Chelsea didn't bid further than their second (?) bid of around £27 mill and it was spur's valuation of £40 mill that they probably would have accepted

Ah ok, that 40 million number stuck in my head from that saga, wasn't sure which it was. I read some speculation recently that Spurs would much prefer doing business with United and might be willing to sell at a lower price to us than they would Chelsea, wonder if that's actually the case?

Probably doesn't matter much anyway though, since they'd still want more than we are willing/able to pay.

Daniel Levy cares about ££££. Whoever offers the most will end up with Modric.

Everyone cares about money so what's your point? And the second is not true if nobody is willing to bid high (and true of almost any transfer if they are).

There were reports Chelsea bid 40 million and we turned them down, that's where the number was from. Don't think it's true think they bid ~32 million.

Wrt to spurs evaluation last year there were no negotiations we refused to discuss selling him to Chelsea so the idea we were holding out for more money is revisionist history.

Would be quite keen to see some sources either way on that, was definitely under the opinion that Chelsea offered something absurd last summer like £20 million

Their first bid was 22 million. Google is a good source.

Nobody can be totally sure but people closely involved with the two clubs, but what I seem to recall is that the first two bids (reported as 22m and 27m) were real and the much reported and sensationalized third bid in fact did not exist. Probably because the first two offers went straight into the shredder without consideration.

I thought it was obvious my last post was made in regards to the idea Levy would allow Modric to go to United on a lower bid, rather than Chelsea. The guy is known to be tight as **** to negotiate with. He definitely does not have the character to lose a few million based on some geographical principle.
