But philosophically I don't think the level of niceness/impact of the deed should come into play.
Why not? The situation you present here about the woman being mugged is wildly different than the Everett situation.

If you want to use a funeral analogy, it's more like somebody famous dies and the funeral is right in your back yard. You choose not to go.
No! Refusing not to go would be like refusing to click on the thread(edited to add: Or if you didn't know who he was and what it was about then clicking the back button once you realized what it was about). Clicking on the thread and saying that you're not going to be participating(Clark) or mocking those that do(Dids) would be like going and being disrespectful.

And then you decide to step outside and have a smoke, and there are idiots everywhere!

Wait, so we can't post if we don't care? Says who? Why? Just so the people who don't really "care" but posted to say that they do care feel better?
It's not that you "can't" post, it's just that most posters don't understand why you would want to. Or, put another way, how is this topic any different than any of the many others that you read, don't care about, and then move on.
This does not apply to Vyse. He posts something stupid in pretty much every thread he reads.

Because the fact that sending the email is a small impact deed was never presented as an argument for not doing it.

Suzzer, if some guy hurt his spine in front of me, and I had the ability to save him, I would do the good deed.

However, I will not mail letters to random lady's who were mugged.

Now DUCY?

That's not very philosophical.

According to research, he'll probably be about as happy a year from now as he would be if he won the lottery instead of becoming paralyzed.

Reading this thread was the biggest mistake I've made today.

Also, I agree with Homer about everything in this thread.

Would it be wrong of me to send him a letter that says, "Thank you for doing a great job of illustrating why poor tackling form can cause permanent injury, disability, or even death. I have been trying to tell my Pop Warner players to keep their heads up when tackling for weeks now and your injury, caused by improper form, may have saved one of their lives."

Your edit is easily the most hateful and senseless post in this thread.

Agreed. Lots of real exciting stuff going on in that field right now.

all the posters before you were posting was "sent". And you felt the need to say "Nah".
I veiw both responses as identical. If one thinks there's no good reason for me to say nah, then I think there's logically also no good reason for one to say sent.

They would be the same if it weren't for the predictability of human emotion.
You are smart enough to know that posting "nah" would predictably agitate some.
Posting "sent" conforms.

Not wanting to conform, you had a choice to agitate or not agitate.
When you are smart enough to realize that the two answers will create totally different responses, they are no longer equal.

Agitating makes things more interesting, and that's why I guess you posted "nah".

It should be noted (again) that nobody's actually said that.

Was reading the report on ESPN.com. Says that his, potentially, great turn around is due to the Bills' doctor pumping ice cold saline into his body to put him into hypothermia to slow down swelling and pressure. I've always wondered how they come up with this stuff and how many mice had they're spines broken and pumped with crazy stuff before they figured this was working.
Good article in Newsweek a few weeks back about this technique, and how body cooling is helping to save a lot of heart attack victims.
