Guy kills girl is a story as old as time. Guy gets catfished by a friend and then has the fake girlfriend killed off before rising to prominence as a Heisman candidate and a spot in the national title game? Little more novel

i don't even think he'll make it past this round, let alone win it all. haven't voted yet so don't know what the breakdown looks like

Te'o also brought the laughs for his football ability getting exposed as nearly as non-existent as his girlfriend. And of course lol Notre Dame.

check out 4:24 and 6:59 in the video for maximum lols but really the entire thing is hilarious

Can't believe Glorious Pistol Pistorious won't make it through. This one is big and probably a much bigger world story. The Olympic/Jail Bound Without Any Legs thread was def one of my favorites of the year.

went with Oscar & Teo based on the uniqueness of the stories, and the SE threads about them were good too.

Hernandez was just kind of a standard "athlete turns out to be a murderous thug" story, which seems to happen every once in a while. sure he probably killed a couple people, but i mean everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever. just think the uniqueness of the other stories puts them over this one, but i seem to be in the minority on that.

Oscar had the amazing post by Empire Man: (Was one of my favorites over the past year)

In the 400m, people stand on a line, a gun goes off, somebody gets to a farther line faster than everybody else and he wins. If you want, you can wear shoes.

Pistorius doesn't have any shoes because he doesn't have any feet: Pistorius has no feet whatsoever. If he had one foot and could hop a 44 second 400m, he would be eligible because he would then be using a human foot. Having no human feet totally sucks for him, and it sucks that there are things in life that he just can't do. He will never feel what it's like to be barefoot in the grass. He will never give another man a satisfying footjob. He will never have a proper pedicure, he will never be a spokesman for plantar fasciitis, his little piggie is never going to the market and it's definitely never going all the way home--because it never existed. Similarly, Pistorius should not be allowed to compete in the Able Bodied Olympic Games to be judged against all the bi-footed people. Pistorius is an admirable guy and I think probably a hero, but we can all agree that the dude doesn't have any feet--and it sure looks like this helps him because, instead of feet, he has two donkey kong springs stapled to his drumstick stumps, and I know this sounds crazy, but it turns out that having trampolines for feet HELPS HIM A WHOLE LOT. The burden of proof should be on him to show that he doesn't get an advantage from walking around on trampolines, and to disinterested observers, this has thus far not been shown.

A more interesting tangent might be: what if a person with no arms was super fast? Yeah I know, this seems really unlikely bc it sure seems like we get tons of propulsion from our arm movement, but just imagine, what if some armless superfugitive elbowed his way into the scene and started obliterating all the world records? Well if that happened, then I think we'd end up having another international debate about the fairness of that, and honestly it would be a tougher debate than this one, because a collection of historians and nasa scientists would agree that when it comes to running, FEET are more useful than ARMS. And we've already had versions of this debate before, for example, blind runners are allowed to compete in the Olympics. But Pistorius has a different problem, mainly that he is a runner who has neither feet nor shins nor calves, but instead he has wall-e and c3po and two monster truck shocks, and holy **** we are actually talking about whether this is fair to the other runners or not?

Voted for Oscar and Teo, but could have easily chosen either of the other options
