55-45, elections are so polarized that a 1984 style ass beating really isn't possible. 10 points in today's climate is an absolute demolition

The reason people like their own Congressman is that most of the news that Congressman makes that appears in the local news is positive: helping veterans, walking in parades, cutting ribbons on bridges, etc. The votes they take that lead to shutdowns and other ridiculousness don't make the local news. Also, we don't necessarily know whether they would still like the Congressman in a competitive environment because 90% of districts aren't competitive.

They reliably vote for the party that wants their opportunities restricted, wants minimum wage to remain low, wants them to have to pay for private health care, wants taxes to remain low so that social programs designed to benefit specifically these people cannot be funded, wants to reduce spending on education for specifically these people, wants to celebrate the "real America" manifested by the Confederate South, wants to defeat net neutrality so that private business can control access to information on the internet, wants to maintain vast wealth inequality as a matter of first principles, and wants to protect the 'right' of corporate persons to evade taxation even though those same corporations refuse to hire this exact set of people and even though the economic 'benefits' of corporate tax avoidance harm these same people.

3. They actively espouse retrograde social values taught to them by the same Republican Party that wants to demonize liberals for not appreciating this retrograde voting cohort.

4. They constitute the one voting cohort the Republican Party can rely on, which means they are coddled and reaffirmed by the Republican Party so that it can win elections while simultaneously disenfranchinsing them on purpose to maintain that one voting edge.

5. They remain white and thus comparatively privileged, especially in their usually-racist communities, and still fail to grasp opportunities.

6. Are PROUD members of the "work hard, get there" school of American thought. Their OWN ETHOS indicates that it IS their fault they're failures.

I'm sympathetic to the lack of economic opportunity presented to these people. That's a problem worth solving. But they are going to fight tooth and nail and rifle to prevent that from ever happening, and the Republican Party is going to encourage every scratch, bite and bullet because it literally cannot survive without white nationalist objective morons supporting it.

That voting cohort is the literal worst of America. They are morons. They do not help themselves. There's no reason to discuss this problem as if there's some innately non-moronic excuse for their innate need to sabotage themselves and the rest of the country.

Whitman called Trump Hitler months ago so her endorsing Hillary is no surprise.

I also wonder how much it really matters if R start to abandon him. So much of his base just wouldn't care.

I mean, how much are people really changing their minds at this point? Feels like people are pretty entrenched. I know polls are moving but they could just be getting a more accurate reflection of where people were already at.

I think that's an incorrect way to frame the problem. The issue isn't that the liberals haven't tried to lift up the poorest in society, but rather that the segment we're discussing have been prioritizing issues that are not likely to lift them out of the slump (gunz, god, abortion, etc)

Yeah, that's true. There's a lot of blame to go around and they need to take some responsibility for some of it themselves. Fortunately, I've seen statistics explaining that the younger segment of this population are starting to relent some on these social issues except for one of them, which is of course, guns.

Honestly, the part where she blames Obama for Iraq may be the least embarrassing moment in that clip.

and comparatively, that's fine. Guns isn't just a social issue, there are plenty of people who actually hunt for food and taking away their deer or elk etc is a non trivial matter. and 99% of them are responsible gun owners.

other issues are far more important imo

I mean, not to say you are wrong, but this is really a profound indictment on the US. Trump is the most meritless candidate imaginable; transparently unfit for office, and a genuinely atrocious person who is running a terrible campaign to boot. If this guy really gets 45% just for showing up, it's worth considering whether this country isn't just broken and irredeemable. I'm still naively hoping he is drawing live to a 50+ point loss. Call me a dreamer, I guess.

yes and it is a recycled story from january (when the obama administration SAID IN PUBLIC THEY WERE DOING THIS) and there is zero reason not to take the administration at its word that this was for money we legitimately owed iran after a court ruling

but notice how this isn't even just idiot news sites like fox news reporting this, cbs, nbc, etc are all reporting the same thing"u.s.a secretly gives iran 400m" with the implication that there is something shady going on it is such horse****. just a pathetic media we have
