There is a sort of irony in McCarthy totally refusing to cut a deal with Dems to save himself.

He could've easily gotten with Dems and said "Look, keep me in power and I'll codify some rules that help you and get you X, Y, and Z that you want". He'd have completely sidelined the 8 or so nuttiest nutjobs that just humiliated him. Hell, he would've probably had the power to expel Gaetz afterwards.

You'd expect the spineless jellyfish to save himself, but he just...didn't. Instead he said he wanted all the smoke and died of asphyxia.

He made a deal with Dems to keep the government open and Gaetz said he was going to motion to vacate the seat. He could've moved to save himself. Instead he went on TV and blamed Dems for the shutdown.

That's a pretty egregious way to alienate the only people that can possibly save you at that point. Then he comes out at the last moment when he could make an effort to stave off being booted and says "I'm not going to provide anything to them to save my Speakership" ok then.
