The population growth in developed countries has slowed to the point where we can't expect the economic growth that we've had for the last 80-100 years. Pension funds will have to tune down their expectations. When the population grows at 1% or lower per year, it's ludicrous (LUDA!) to promise pension returns of 7% (which is what a lot of them still do!!!).

Bond yields are low worldwide, stock market growth is low worldwide, GDP growth is low worldwide. Money is just going to grow less slowly in the future, so investors will be worse off compared to 50-70 years ago and your income will be much more of a factor in your wealth accumulation than investment strategy or willingness to invest.

Yeah I think this is a really good point, when you consider how much of our economy is driven by digital goods and services. If someone spends a year producing a massive data spreadsheet, did they produce a good or provide a service? Or somewhere in between?

I do think our traditional metrics lag behind what is actually going on and what is actually valuable in our current economy.

Well the good news is that people in this country seem pretty well-adjusted right now, and aren't in a blind rage even though the economy is going gangbusters and there's no real problems domestically.

So I'm sure a gigantic recession followed by a complete re-alignment of economic expectations will be handled with stoicism and no violence against scapegoat out-groups or anything.
