I won't lie. The idea of a 9/11 type event during Trump's presidency kind of gets me excited. I actually looked into whether there was a way to bet on that happening.

Is [President Trump] as bad as you feared?

Not at all. [...]

What about all this emboldening of racism, though?

I live in L.A., where I'm always faced with the lunacy of the left. I didn't know that the same lunacy existed on the right. So I never really bought into this notion that everybody is racist — because there was a black president, you know? But the Sacha Baron Cohen show has been a frightening eye-opener. I was also in a bubble, but in a different way. I guess everyone is a ****ing idiot. Everyone is an idealogue. Hopefully the pendulum will slow down in the next four years.

And swing back toward liberalism?

Not necessarily. I'm happy the #MeToo movement has slowed down a little bit. It used to be, "One hundred women can't be lying." And then it became, "One woman can't lie." And that became, "I believe all women." And then you're like, "What?" Like, that Chris Hardwick guy I really thought got the blunt end of the stick there.

What about when someone admits to wrongdoing?

The model used to be: admit wrongdoing, show complete contrition and then we give you a second chance. Now it's admit wrongdoing and you're finished. And so the only way to survive is to deny, deny, deny. That's not healthy — that there is no forgiveness. I do think that at some point it will end with a completely innocent person of prominence sticking a gun in his head and ending it. That's my guess. I know a couple of people this has happened to.

Who?

Well, Louis [C.K.] and Roseanne [Barr] are the two people I know. And Roseanne was so broken up [after her show's reboot was canceled] that I got Louis to call her, even though Roseanne was very hard on Louis before that. But she was just so broken and just crying constantly. There are very few people that have gone through what they have, losing everything in a day. Of course, people will go, "What about the victims?" But you know what? The victims didn't have to go through that.

“Out of sensitivity to our audience and in light of Norm Macdonald’s comments in the press today, ‘The Tonight Show’ has decided to cancel his appearance on Tuesday’s telecast,” NBC said in a statement. “Tonight Show’s” decision to drop Macdonald came even after he apologized for his comments later in the day

Macdonald told [Howard] Stern his comments on the matter had been misconstrued.

"I never defended them," said Macdonald. "I am completely behind the #MeToo movement."

He continued, "You'd have to have Down Syndrome to not feel sorry for — #MeToo is what you want for your daughters, and you want that to be the future world, of course. And I meet all kinds of women with terrible stories of what's happened to them. So, I wasn't talking about the victims. They asked me about Roseanne."

Mr. President, can I show this to you?” Cohn fanned out the pages of data in front of the president. “See, the biggest leavers of jobs—people leaving voluntarily—was from manufacturing.”
“I don’t get it,” Trump said.
Cohn tried to explain: “I can sit in a nice office with air conditioning and a desk, or stand on my feet eight hours a day. Which one would you do for the same pay?”
Cohn added, “People don’t want to stand in front of a 2,000 degree blast furnace. People don’t want to go into coal mines and get black lung. For the same dollars or equal dollars, they’re going to choose something else.”
Trump wasn’t buying it.
Several times Cohn just asked the president, “Why do you have these views?”
“I just do,” Trump replied. “I’ve had these views for 30 years.”
“That doesn’t mean they’re right,” Cohn said. “I had the view for 15 years I could play professional football. It doesn’t mean I was right.

oh and from a meeting before:

Quote:
The North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) had sucked the manufacturing lifeblood out of the U.S. just as Trump predicted, Navarro said, turning Mexico into a manufacturing powerhouse, while driving U.S. workers to the poorhouse. U.S. steelworkers were being laid off and steel prices were dropping. Trump should impose tariffs on imported steel.
Trump said he agreed.
“If you just shut the **** up and listen,” Cohn said to both Trump and Navarro, dropping deference for the moment, “you might learn something.”
Goldman Sachs, to Cohn, had always been about research, data and fact. Anytime you went into a meeting, you should have more hard, documented information than anyone else in the room.
“The problem,” Cohn said, “is that Peter comes in here and says all this stuff and doesn’t have any facts to back it up. I have the facts.” He had sent Trump a heavily researched paper on the service economy. He knew Trump had never read it and probably never would. Trump hated homework.
Mr. President, Cohn said, trying to summarize, “You have a Norman Rockwell view of America.” The U.S. economy today is not that economy. Today, “80 plus percent of our GDP is in the service sector.”

Here's a CNN article about the growing death toll in the days, weeks, and months after the hurricanes.

https://www.cnn.com/2018/08/29/us/pu...oll/index.html

The 3k figure floating around is the total death toll on the island during the 4 months after the storm but based on the past four years the excess death toll that can be attributed to the storm and the botched disaster recovery is around 1400. Trump is pretty well screwed on this. The 3k figure is absurd and not real but he's not going to look good touting the the correct numbers either. I'm sure that's why he's sticking with the 6-18 number when he was on the island two weeks after the storm when the official death toll was lol 16.

I wonder if there will ever be a good report on the deaths attributed directly to poor disaster recovery. I can't imagine any government agency doing it at least while Republicans are in control. Pretty sad if the true figure is ~100 directly from the storm and ~1300 from third world level disaster relief when it's a U.S. territory and 1k+ U.S. citizens dying due to government negligence.

Trump's tweets seem pretty good politically actually and I doubt he actually wrote them himself. They're factually correct in what he's saying though misleading. His base will eat it up.

Quote:
3000 people did not die in the two hurricanes that hit Puerto Rico.
That's correct. It's around 1200-1450 according to recent independent reports.

Quote:
When I left the Island, AFTER the storm had hit, they had anywhere from 6 to 18 deaths.
Also correct. When he visited the island two weeks after the storm the official death toll was 16.

Quote:
As time went by it did not go up by much.
True again, the storm hit in September and by December the official death toll was revised to 64 from 34 which was announced after Trump departed. However, independent and credible reports in Nov/Dec put the total at around 1000.

Quote:
Then, a long time later, they started to report really large numbers, like 3000... This was done by the Democrats in order to make me look as bad as possible when I was successfully raising Billions of Dollars to help rebuild Puerto Rico.
Definitely true. Of course, when you're an incompetent idiot your opponents are going to use your mistakes against you.

Quote:
If a person died for any reason, like old age, just add them onto the list.
That is how you get to the 3k death figure so true again.

Quote:
Bad politics.
Lol, it's great politics and fair play to use your mistakes against you. This and the "I Love Puerto Rico!" are the only absolutely false statements in the two tweets.

It's so Trump to mislead by suggesting the death toll was 99% less than the actual figure while whining that the Democrats are inflating the total when they're merely doubling it.
