I'm willing to forgive a lot, like if people were cheerleaders for the Iraq War but then issued a mea culpa and appeared to actually change their worldview as a result of it, then OK, welcome aboard Team Good Guys. But McCain lived through the Vietnam War, from which experience he... became a cheerleader for Iraq, after which, well into Iraq being a disaster, he was dancing around singing "Bomb Iran" and being a huge cheerleader for same.

So while it's true that he sometimes did things which helped out Team Good Guys, on balance **** him.

Really tough to admire someone whose only whiff of empathy relates to bad **** they personally have experienced.

Oh, he's def not on the good team. By any means. Just saying that, like most humans, he does have SOME admirable qualities. I think compared to others here, I see him more as a guy who often tried to do what he thought was right, but was just totally misguided and/or stupid. Also, thirsty for war.

He gets way too much credit for remaining a pow. He was following the proper rules and procedure of usa military. If he had accepted removal it would have been an offense as an officer.

Also, regardless of that, it was not some act of complete charity. He absolutely intended to pursue a career in politics and he knew how important such a perceived act it was. I am cynical enough to say it was completely self-serving given how useful it was to his career.

What the hell? She's ugly because she takes after him too much and not enough from her mom. She got Bill's nose which by itself was enough to doom her appearance.

To be clear, what he said was: “Do you know why Chelsea Clinton is so ugly? Because Janet Reno is her father.”. It was a joke he told at a 1998 fundraising dinner.

I vaguely remember that now. I'd forgotten and the comment just strikes me as super bizarre since she takes after Bill so much. Awful joke.

I hate that guy's writing style, but there is some good stuff in the post.

McCain fractured both arms and a leg when he ejected from the aircraft,[37] and nearly drowned after he parachuted into Trúc Bạch Lake. Some North Vietnamese pulled him ashore, then others crushed his shoulder with a rifle butt and bayoneted him.
Quote:
Although McCain was seriously wounded and injured, his captors refused to treat him. They beat and interrogated him to get information, and he was given medical care only when the North Vietnamese discovered that his father was an admiral.
Quote:
He had lost 50 pounds (23 kg), was in a chest cast, and his gray hair had turned as white as snow.[35] McCain was sent to a different camp on the outskirts of Hanoi.[41] In December 1967, McCain was placed in a cell with two other Americans who did not expect him to live more than a week.[42] In March 1968, McCain was placed into solitary confinement, where he would remain for two years.[43]
Quote:
Beginning in August 1968, McCain was subjected to a program of severe torture.[47] He was bound and beaten every two hours; this punishment occurred at the same time that he was suffering from dysentery.[35][47] Further injuries brought McCain to "the point of suicide," but his preparations were interrupted by guards.
Victor, you really think McCain was thinking "This will look great on my resume!" while all this was happening?

he didnt have the option to leave then. what he did during that time was attempt suicide and agree to sign documents arranged by the n. vietnamese (ie cave to torture).

once they found out he was the son of a super high ranking general, they fixed him up.

I was reading what Vic said as...so many POWs that got the hell beat out of them but McCain was smart enough to Parlay that into getting into Congress like just being a POW gives you lots of cred with others who have "served" and being able to leverage that into votes...seems fairly standard card to play when running for office.

That said the waxing poetic on McCain on all the networks shouldnt be a surprise. Its not like we're gonna get someone to say "yeah well you know he voted for every tax cut known to man, elite war monger, and outside of Drumpf took more money from the NRA then any other politician in the the history of United States" while this giant circle jerk is going on. I mean come on this is the "thoughts and prayers" party.

I don't care one way or the other, but it is somewhat interesting how petty and spineless Trump is.

Feels like we'll see Beto on the national political stage in coming years regardless of the outcome of this election.

The number of politicians who even know enough history to give that answer spontaneously is disgustingly small. The number who could deliver that answer that well is in the single digits.

Yeah that Beto guy looks an absolute dream future president from what little I've seen of him. No doubt the GOP propaganda machine will either dig up or create a series of scandals and render him unelectable.

Most politicians suck **** ass. Who wants to be a politician? Think of all the most engaging, perspicacious, capable people you have known in your life - how many of them ever indicated even the most remote interest in pursuing politics? I'm sure most of us have been around at least some impressive people in academia or industry; I don't remember any of the ones I've encountered seriously considering throwing it all away in that **** pool.
