Anyone interested in doing this draft? I thought about it years ago but never brought it up:

You play God for a society. Your goal is not for them to thrive but for them to wither and die, as quickly as possible. You will pick and choose various things that will help expedite this process.

You will draft 1 of the following:

Land. The way you will draft land is you will pick a current country. You then get the political border of this country and all the land (and natural resources or lack thereof) it encompasses. So if you draft North Korea, you don’t get a ****ty dictator – you just get the land that North Korea owns. So your goal here is simply to pick a country that owns very crappy land that is not conducive to a society thriving. There is no limit to the size (big or small) of the country you pick. Just make sure it’s on Earth – no outside planets, moons, or other heavenly bodies are allowed. Oh – you also get the climate found on that land. So consider this.

1 leader. You can choose anyone you want. Doesn’t have to be an actual leader. It can just be a dumbass person that will lead your anti-civilization into a downward spiral of self-destruction. I think dead historical figures are on the table for this one. Though I could be talked into doing just current people – I think it will be better for the draft if we exhume all the badboys who perished before their time.

1 Virus/bacteria/disease/strain, etc. Your society will own the rights to said ailment so make sure you pick a good one. Historical ailments are draftable. So if something has been pretty much eradicated as we know it, it will still be a problem in your society if you draft it because the people would have to invent the immunization to eradicate it.

Music. You will choose 1 musical artist or 1 song that will play incessantly throughout your land. The goal is to pick music which might incite rage or civil warfare. The way the music works in theory is pretty simple. If one of your citizens is in their own private dwelling – they won’t really hear the music. But if they go outside just assume the song or songs are some kind of reasonably-loud ambient sound that you can’t avoid without covering your ears. Like when we’re at a stop light and someone pulls up next to us and plays music. Just imagine that – but everywhere. If you choose 1 song – it will play on a loop forever. If you choose 1 artist – I suppose their entire catalogue would be played, then repeated once done.

1 vehicle type. This vehicle type will be the only vehicle available to anyone in the entire society. Pick something that will rustle jimmies and hopefully destroy any crop that some lady planted. Incessant road rage should be the goal. Since it is pivotal to everyone’s society, assume we all have unlimited fuel for these vehicles. Oil and gas will not be in shortage for anyone. We want these vehicles out and about and causing harm.


1 weapon. Everyone in your anti-civilization is automatically equipped with 1 usable weapon, whether they want it or not. You are here to enable them. Usable weapon means if you draft a gun you ldo get unlimited bullets for your society. And just assume everyone has unlimited access to them. Weapon can be creative. Once many of the big ones go off the board try to think of something fun and dangerous. Doesn’t have to be a traditional “weapon” as we know it but it’s safe to say your citizens will find a way to utilize it as such – especially if they can’t escape UNDRAFTED SINGER’s music all day long.

1 animal. This animal will roam wild. This animal will also serve as your only form of meat to eat. So you need to consider both the taste of the animal as well as its danger level. If you choose an animal that eats human babies, but also happens to make a great rotisserie – well that’s sort of win-lose. You’re looking for lose-lose here folks. Assume unlimited animals. But if they are really hard to kill then that will be considered when determining how much meat your citizens get to eat. But if they kill an animal to eat it just assume another re-spawns a few miles away in a safe area.

1 drink. Other than water. Pick 1 drink that is found all over the place. Something that kills plenty of brain cells, makes women flash their tits, and makes guys want to fistfight and stuff (or worse). Don’t pick just any liquid. You can’t pick “liquid **** from a poo processing plant”. Pick something we know and recognize as an actual drink. You can feed it to the plants if it’s what the plants crave.

1 social reformist. Other than your political leader, pick a guy or girl who wants to rile up everyone and lead them to whatever whackjob thing they can think of. Historical figures are allowed. Think televangelists, racist leaders, crazy false prophets, cult leaders, etc. Or just kind of a crazy person. Assume whoever you pick as your reformist will play this role pretty much every waking hour. So if you pick, like, Gary Busey as your social reformist, assume that’s what he suddenly wants to do every waking hour. Tell people his crazy ideas and try to lead them to his nonsensical fantasyland.

I first got this idea years ago after doing the Humanities draft in The Lounge. I thought this would kind of be the opposite of that. The goal is to have fun and be creative, and maybe we all learn a little bit about historical figures, reformists, or ailments, etc. Your society should end up looking like Idiocracy – only way worse.

For the sake of the draft, we will assume all of our civilizations will be populated by people of all races and religions – proportional to the current world population. Also assume the society inherently wants to thrive so people will try to plant crops (if your land allows it) and cure illnesses. Assume a mediocre, but serviceable, level of health care professionals. Maybe like those found in Canada or something. Assume we start off with mediocre police force, firefighters, hospitals, schools, etc. So the starting social infrastructure is good enough to succeed but nothing amazing.

Draft is 9 rounds. I lost my old write-up from years ago and it seems like I had 1 or 2 other items but since last night I can't think of what else I'm missing so we'll go with these 9 items. If anything else should be drafted let me know.

You can draft UNDRAFTED as either your leader or social reformist. But why would you want to **** up other nations? The goal is to **** up your own.

A Life and Construction Draft would probably have a better response

This is in theory fairly interesting, but you just pick [UNDRAFTED] or [UNDRAFTED] land and instantly win with no other variable mattering.

You know, I've never done an SE draft before, but usually follow them. Time to get involved.

The Lounge did an Arts & Humanities draft years ago in which we tried to design a society that would thrive and be sort of high-brow if you will. It was a lot of fun and I learned a lot. This is the complete opposite of that one.

Not entirely sure I agree but we'll see. Nobody ever "wins" these drafts anyway. They are fun, though. If you want certain lands off the draft table then I'm willing to take them off for everybody but it kind of defeats the purpose of the draft.

Hopefully we can start tonight. I'm not averse to starting with a small number of people. There are always people who, once an awesome draft starts, post "hey is it too late to get in on this?"

With the disease selection, how exactly does it work? Does it start in one person? A percentage of people? And animal? Something else?

That's a good question and one I haven't really thought of. If it's bacteria, I was assuming it's just kind of scattered about the land/items such that people who are out and about will basically come in contact with it. But some ailments might only exist with a human or otherwise live host. I don't know much about medicine at all so maybe we can decide as a group before the draft starts. I'm open to suggestions.

It may be reasonable to assume it begins in 1 random person. But we then can't assume that person dies as host before spreading the disease because that would defeat the purpose.

I'm in. Sounds real cool though I agree a draft constructing an ideal society sounds better (the mix available of philosophers and scientists and economic structures and leaders and artists would be a lot more creative)

I was just referencing a fictional game with similar rules from the "Oryx and Crake" novel series written by Atwood. Its a computer game where you can pick and choose and trade the same type of variables to build or destroy civilizations.

"Extinctathon" and "Blood and Roses" were the names of the games, the latter more apropos to this draft.
