Boxing "experts" are obsessed with the past

Tommy Hearns not getting any recognition itt, guy was a star.
hearns is an all time great, but not of the last 20 years.

This i can agree with. But for good reasons. Most past eras was more fun to watch than the current boxing climate.

Easily spinks. The sad part is old Holmes is probably his second best win.

3rd? Now this gets really watered down.

Again, i rated based on resume. And i think Floyd and hopkins just barely edges him out for the fifth spot. I'd be willing to listen to arguments, because my opinion on this fluctuates.

Roy has 2 really good wins in a green-ish hopkins and james toney. But after that it's mostly fluff (and obviously a few good fighters like tarver. griffin. etc)

If we speak about potential, talent etc. I think Roy could be unbeatable at 160. I have a really hard time picking anyone against him at that weight prime for prime. But thats just speculations.
Also lol at anyone leaving out evander in a top5 list.
Morales probably has a slightly better resume than Barrera.

I'm ok with peak Tyson in the GOAT discussion

listen i got in to this in the tennis thread

i value GOAT as 'the best boxer ive ever seen' rather than the usual 'most accomplished'

so who is 'the best you've ever seen' (without pulling up fight histories and such, just a pure 'wow hes the best ever')

for me the 'holy **** hes the best ive ever seen' (so in my lifetime) is probably

RJJ
Tyson
Pacman

quadsas, how does a 4 year run of knocking out boxcar bums make Tyson the GOAT?

You wanna talk about ability and talent, sure. Tyson looked like the complete package. But his resume for the era is remarkably weak. Michael Spinks and Razor Ruddock are his most notable wins. I mean, really? That's GOAT material?

"Best I've ever seen" is probably Pacquiao, because I haven't seen the guy do anything unremarkable yet - except for hugging it out with Mosley.

My favourite peak was Roy Jones Jr.

Most impressive resume of our era? Bernard Hopkins.

roy jones jr gets the nod in one GOAT category. Youtube highlight.
Everyone probably seen this already, but do it again. Worth a watch once a week at least.

Guess you've seen "legendary nights", portraying that fight? Thats basically the cliffnotes of meldricks awesomeness.

Must be the fastest fighter I've ever seen p4p.

Hes not by far the greatest resumewise or even skillswise, he was just so amazingly talented.

I have Lucian Bute in my top 5 of all-time, along with Kenneth Bentley and Floyd Mayweather Jr. I'll reveal the rest later.

Tough to argue with this, especially since he arguably has won every fight that he lost that went to decision and is just an overall general badass. Him throwing down the the PR flag in the Tito pre-fight hype is still maybe my favorite boxing moment.

The best HW is obviously the GOAT unless people actually buy into bull**** like p4p

I know Meldrick Taylor had maybe the worst corner of all time

that fight was one of the best ever though, just unreal how dumb his corner was the whole way

learnt two things in this thread. Past fighters could never be as great as the currently active, and p4p is bull**** that should be disregarded.

Gents, hail the new GOAT

apparently George Benton (the guy i linked via youtube earlier itt) died today. Real shame.

He was a real solid fighter and an even greater trainer. Trained Whitaker, Holyfield, Meldrick among others.

It's funny that I had never heard of him until you put that video up earlier, a few hours later i look on twitter and he's dead.

Do you actually think Wlad is better than Vitali? I think Vitali beats the crap out of him.

Vitali must be pissed off with his little brother ruining the Klitschko name. No one ever really has many bad things to say about Vitali.

Just downloaded the fight. Complete joke of an ending, wouldn't surprise me if they rigged it. Post fight interviews were hilarious and I agree with Floyd in that Larry should be fired because he is truly awful. Ortiz tries way too hard to be nice, we get it, you came from nothing. Get over it.

I have just spent the last hour or so watching old fights on youtube. Benn vs McClellan (despite the tragic ending) and Honeygan vs Curry. So awesome.

Great fight, I always feel a bit guilty about enjoying it though.

I made a small bet with some guy that Canelo was going to win every round of his fight (probably a dumb bet on my part because I didn't even know who the other guy was). The only thing I knew was that Canelo is awesome and felt super good about the bet. We went by Harold Lederman's scorecard so I lost the bet after the second round (a round that I thought Canelo won). After that, my dad yelled at me for being a dumbass. :/
