Vanderjagt had some pretty fail moments too, in much bigger situations.

This. But just talking about a 3 minute meltdown, it's way up there.

This is actually a pretty standard loss for the Texans. Seriously, in 6+ years, and across 100 mostly meaningless games, we as fans have had some disgustingly gut-wrenching losses.

This was definitely the worst, though. A close 2nd was when VY ran like 35 yards in for a TD in front of our home crowd, and we had to endure a year of "VY is God, Mario Williams sucks" sports-radio callers.

I mean, it's been said but when you are up by that much with that little time left, you have to win that game 100 out of 100 times. You have a chance to get the first W of the season, in the first home game after a hurricane, and against a player and a team (Manning and the Colts) who have owned your franchise forever. So much fail in so little time.

I feel terrible for Sage because I really like him as a QB. He led the team back from a 10-0 hole and basically stormed up and down the field all day. He really had played a hell of a game, especially on short notice. He was trying to put the nail in Schaub's coffin or something and seal the starter's job by showing the guts and glory of helicoptering for a first down to "seal the W". Stupid, sure, but it was all metagame, baby! He was either going to take Schaub's job, or get run out of the league by next Sunday!!! Hahaha.

Plus, I suppose he has no idea how to close out a game, seeing as he usually comes in when they're down like 40 points and he's just called upon to gunsling it all over the field.

The big picture is that none of this stuff really matters, they're a bad team in a good division. I really thought they were capable of winning 9 games this season, boy was I wrong.

I agree with an earlier poster who said that if Schaub started, they likely would have never had the lead all day. It's a shame that Sage did so much to take charge of the game, and then he never took his foot off the gas, tried to do too much, and is now a league-wide laughingstock. Poor guy. I hope for the sake of the team he hangs in there and learns a lot from this game.

Watching the game though, it was SUCH epic fail, that I wasn't even mad. I was just basically shocked and numb. I was hoping the end would come before some loony in the stands assassinated Sage.

I don't think he's a Cardinal fan. In fact, I didn't know there were any left in AZ.

You guys have too many good players on both sides to be mediocre/bad forever....hopefully you won't turn into the next AZ Cardinals

I think you could say that last year. don't think so this season, but we'll see. as a resident of Houston, I agree with the rest of your post.

I think this is very true.

If he doesn't fumble, that gets shown on every highlight show as "GUTS! GIVING 110% FOR YOUR TEAM!" at the end of a string of good plays, and he's definitely the starter next week.

LOL Tom Jackson: "There are 17 teams at .500 or better. That tells me there is a lot of good football being played in this league right now."

(This seemed as good a thread as any to post in.)

Not enough heat on the coaching for not just running the ball imo.

This pretty well sums up the thread.
Everyone hating on Rosenfels either saw the very end of the game after their game ended, or saw highlights.

If you saw the game (which seems to be me, PHB and very few others) then you know that he played very well and the blame should rest on the coach.

Examples of why this was blatantly Kubiak's fault:

Leading by 10 with 4:03 left, here is Kubiaks play calling (keep in mind they start at the IND 41 because of an onside kick):

Houston - 4:03
1st-10, IND41 4:03 A. Green rushed to the right for 1 yard gain
2nd-9, IND40 3:59 A. Green rushed to the right for 1 yard gain
3rd-8, IND39 3:36 S. Rosenfels rushed to the left for 7 yard gain. S. Rosenfels fumbled. G. Brackett recovered fumble and returned for 68 yards

So with a 2 score cushion, and Steve Slaton having rushed 15 for 92 at this point, they not only give the ball to Green (who had been far less effective) twice, they decide to call a pass play on 3rd and 8 instead of running the ball to eat more clock and reduce the chance of catastrophe. This pass play was called despite that fact that Andre Johnson was on the sideline with an ice pack on his recently concussed head.

After the big fumble return, what does Kubiak do?

1st-10, HOU20 3:36 S. Slaton rushed to the left for 1 yard gain
2nd-9, HOU21 2:54 S. Rosenfels incomplete pass to the left
3rd-9, HOU21 2:36 S. Rosenfels sacked by R. Mathis. S. Rosenfels fumbled. R. Mathis recovered fumble

One run to Slaton then he decides against running the clock on 2nd down and instead decides to motion Slaton out of the backfield, leaving no RB in the backfield to keep the defense honest. That goes incomplete, stops the clock and then the fateful 2nd fumble comes on the pass they called the next play.

Should Sage have done a better job protecting the ball? Absolutely, but he should have never been put in such a position. This was a brutal mismanaging of the 4 minute drill by Kubiak and company.
