I've stuggled through an awful lot of tripe in these 1st round games, only to be rewarded with some nice darts in this Klaasen/Cullen match. Cullen probably dreamed about playing this well, only to be hit by the Klaasen train.

trouble is that he plays king next, who despite the scoreline was playing really well, and then the winner gets phil. that said, i think jelle can win both of those, and the best player in the other bit of the quarter is jenkins with thornton having gone out already

Close to a final for both players here, given a very likely last 16 opponent of James Wade, and both players reached this stage in differing ways. Caven had a qualifier in Rob Szabo, who played OK after looking unimpressive in his prelim game, but Caven turned on the afterburners after the first four legs were shared, leaving a one darter after nine darts and not losing a leg afterwards, averaging over 96 and checking out nearly 50%. Evans on the other hand didn't get going until he was just about out, surviving two match darts in the third set against Whitlock, before getting the knack of hitting treble twenty extremely quickly, rolling off six straight legs to force a deciding set, getting over the line just before we hit sudden death.

I think Caven should be a bigger favourite here. He averaged more despite not really being pushed, which is always a good sign, and has clearly done better throughout the year. If Evans can play like he did to come back against Whitlock, then Evans should be very live, but if he plays like he did to get in that hole in the first place, then he's in trouble. 1u Caven 7/10, I think he'll be too solid, although Evans grabbing a couple of sets seems fairly likely.

Both players made it through in straight sets in the first round, although oddly enough it was the heavy favourite Chisnall who had the tougher ask, needing three deciding legs against upcoming Austrian talent Rowby John Rodriguez to advance, who missed a few set darts to make it 1-1. Chisnall wasn't that prolific on the 180's as usual, and his checking out wasn't great (it never is though), but he still ended up a shade under a ton on the averages to advance. Kist must have thought all his Christmases came at once, with Pipe averaging just 75, and anything under 80 from your opponent is a free win at this stage, unless you're Cristo Reyes. Kist wasn't spectacular, only hitting the one max, but he didn't really need to do much once he got the break to win the first set.

The two have played before twice this year and Chisnall's won both very comfortably, and I think this'll continue - he's come through a decent test with ease, and Kist's profile is fairly similar to Rodriguez's. Can't see Chizzy losing more than the one set here.

H2H (all time)22
H2H (this year)02 (6-3, UK Open Qualifier, 10-4, Players Championship)

Both players won on opening night, which seems like a lifetime ago even though it was just last week. Anderson started off like a train against preliminary winner Andy Boulton, hitting back to back 11 dart finishes, and it wouldn't be until the third set before he dropped a leg, ending with an average a shade under 100, impressive given that Boulton didn't test him at all. Gurney on the other hand came through a tough test against Jamie Lewis, looking very good in the first set, but showing bottle after Lewis levelled in sets and immediately broke him in the third, to which Gurney broke back straight away and then held out to restore a set lead, before getting the crucial break to start the fourth set and holding out to advance.

Gurney has put the kibosh on Anderson in recent head to head matches, sending him home before the money in an early UK Open qualifier, and also disposed of him in the last major before here, although Anderson was seriously below par that day. Gurney's not going to be intimidated, and can produce a good enough game to test the world champ, but I think over this length of match Anderson is going to pull through enough, and find the extra gears if it ends up being closer than the bookies suggest.

Smith got the scare of his life in the opening round against rising star Jeffrey de Zwaan, who had six perfect in the first and then won six out of seven legs to take a 2-1 lead in sets. Smith levelled with a sweep in the fourth, but the Dutch kid wouldn't go away, forcing a deciding leg in the final set, where Smith won the bull and got down to a two dart finish after nine darts to advance. Smith played very well - only needing 22 darts at double for the 13 legs he won, it was only close because his opponent was equally good. Beaton on the other hand looked quite comfortable against the New Zealand qualifier Koha Kokiri, getting a straight sets win with one of the best games he's had in a long time - although if Kokiri, who averaged 93 despite missing 17 out of 22 darts at double, was able to finish better, it might have been different. Beaton needed deciders in two of the three sets, killing off the game with a 164 kill.

Beaton I think needs to find another scoring gear to have a chance in this one. I think Smith outscores him enough to get enough chances to win, and he wasn't missing much in the first round. It's a seven set match and I can't see Beaton sustaining the scoring he needs for long enough to get over the line.

H2H (this year)02 (6-5, Pro Tour, 4-2, Development Tour)

Dimitri had a career defining win in the first round, coming from a set down against Ian White to win 3-1. This could easily have been a whitewash, as the Belgian missed four darts for the set in the opener. A combination of good power scoring, with six scores over 170, and solid finishing, hitting half his doubles, was enough to keep White at bay, despite the Stoke player coming from two legs down to cause nerves in the fourth by forcing a deciding leg. Benito on the other hand got through against Max Hopp yesterday, never looking in huge trouble despite Hopp outscoring him (23 140+ scores to 12, hitting more 140's than tons) - Hopp simply missed too many doubles, and Benito wasn't too much better on that front, resulting in ordinary statistics.

Think the line looks solid, Benito has more experience (quite hard when he's only 22 himself), has wins over van den Bergh, and has an all round better game. Dimitri can win this, I just don't know whether he'll be able to repeat the great first round performance and take things further.

Previous round3-0 vs Ryder3-0 vs Dolan

H2H (this year)00

Vincent will face his second straight Aussie opponent, having disposed of Loz Ryder in clinical fashion, although van der Voort was never really tested, an 81 average with just the five scores over 140 isn't going to cut it at this level, and it's not like Ryder was scoring well but finishing badly to cause that - he simply didn't score, only actually getting four darts at double in the match, as the Dutchman hit 9/23 and averaged 95 to complete the sweep. Kyle on the other hand did what he needed to do to eliminate Brendan Dolan, who might have wished he'd hit more doubles, as a 22% kill rate wasn't good. Anderson power scored well, with over half his 100 scores being for 140 or more, but was only able to convert this into the one break of throw, but that was all that was needed in the second set, as Dolan couldn't break Anderson at all.

Kyle's going to need to clean up his game to be able to win this one. van der Voort will be taking a lot of legs out in 15 or less, so he needs to do less stuff like the crap he tried when needing 60 against Dolan - only getting one dart at double, said double being the madhouse. I think 1u van der Voort 9/11 is what I'm going for, he's got too much consistency to be just the wrong side of a coinflip price. I can see this being similar to Kyle's last worlds, where he took out a player not in great form with ease, only to fail to someone playing consistently in the next round.

First up, we have a rerun of last year's quarter final, as Barney takes on Bunting in what may well be their final, with the winner almost certainly facing MvG in the next round. Barney of course won that one, but this is a different tournament. Both faced continental opponents - Barney was in a tough match against fellow Netherlands player Dirk van Duijvenbode, holding out the first set before failing to convert a break as DVD made it 2-2. He then went to pieces, needing just a fat 20 to set up tops after two trebles with Barney on 121, hits the third to bust his score. Barney then won the set, and took the last set in straight legs as Dirk's game had gone. Stephen on the other hand had little trouble against veteran German Jyhan Artut, winning six of the first seven legs, before getting over the line after a few jitters, losing a 2-0 in legs lead before nicking the decider.

Fancy Barney strongly for this one - 1.5u van Barneveld 3/5. Bunting only averaged 86 in the first round, and it wasn't due to a bunch of missed doubles - 9/26 isn't awful, although it might have crept up if Jyhan hit more than three from 18. Jyhan outscored Bunting, at least on the 140+ count. Barney played better in round 1 and has a perfect record against Bunting on TV, with five wins from five in the last twelve months (the Euro events are streamed in front of big crowds, so they count for me).

Wade put in a professional performance in round 1 against the competent Greek qualifier John Michael - not dropping his throw once and getting the breaks he needed in the first and third sets to win with a minimum of fuss, hitting nearly three tons per leg on average throughout the match and checking out just shy of 40%, despite missing quite a few in the first set. I can't see who can stop him reaching Anderson in the quarters, who he should test. Newton on the other hand is a huge luckbox, playing at Ebola standards throughout the entire match, barring when he hit two of his five 140+ scores back to back to finish 341 in six darts in the fourth set. It's just that Reyes was sublime for 1.5 sets and AIDS for the rest, letting Newton win the first averaging under 70 despite taking the first two legs in 24 darts, and then doing **** all for the other 2.5 sets.

Wade wins this and the odds seem right, I want to shove on something like 6-10 units just to print some money, but I really can't be arsed

And for our second LOL match of the day, we get Michael van Gerwen, the current world #1 and GOAT, who for a brief time looked like he might be on the receiving end of a ridiculous upset, having won the first two sets without losing the set, then only wins one out of the next seven as unheralded German qualifier Rene Eidams played the darts of his life to level the game at 2-2. It's not like MvG's game dropped, at least not significantly, he still ended up at 99 on the averages with over 50% checkouts, the other guy just went is this real life godmode for two+ sets. On the other hand, we have Darren Webster, who's got to be just happy to have got through what looked like an even first round match against the lowest seed John Henderson, a weird one where Hendo broke in the first set and took it, only for Webster to break twice in the second set and level, including in the deciding set. Not like Hendo was playing awful here, he did have 141 for a 9 in the second leg. John then didn't keep things going, as Darren won six from seven to take a 3-1 sets win.

We just need to look at the head to heads to see how this one should go. Webster did manage to get a win on the floor in 2014, as well as getting to a deciding leg in the group stages of the Slam against him, but with his decline in form I think we see something like their tour meetings from this year. 4-0 looks like it might be a good bet, currently just the right side of evens, but I don't generally do gimmick bets (although if I see someone price boosting I'll probably be on the blower to get on)

Remainder later or tomorrow, I'm off out to get pissed

Monday kicks off with the only match between unseeded players, as Alan Norris faces Joe Murnan. Norris had a terrific opening match, finishing off an sub-par Rob Thornton in straight sets. Chuck only allowed the Grand Prix winner to take three legs in the match, outscoring the Scot (one less 100, but six more 140+ scores) and didn't mess about on finishing, hitting more than half of his doubles. Oddly, two of Thornton's three legs were run against the throw, so if Norris can play better on his own throw, that'd be scary. Murnan came through a turgid tussle against Andy Hamilton, finally coming through 6-4 in the deciding set, doing well to refocus after thinking he'd won the match at 5-4 in legs. Both players had similar scoring stats and both averaged 86, but Murnan critically hit more doubles from the same number of attempts, and that was that.

Norris is rightly a solid favourite, I think he's not going to be quite dominant enough that we can consider firing at the price we've got, but should win through to the last 16 a large proportion of the time. No bets here.

Previous round3-1 vs Young3-0 vs McGowan

H2H (this year)00

Now for a slightly better game, as perennial contender Terry Jenkins faces a resurgent Mark Webster, with the winner having a great opportunity to reach the quarters as they face the winner of the previous game. Jenkins made hard work of the American number one Darin Young, losing the first set and being two legs down in the second, but was able to grind it out, pulling three legs back to level at 1-1 and win the remaining sets, coming back in the fourth with Young throwing to make it 2-2 in sets before winning in a decider. 8 maximums is a decent return, but he can do a lot better than ending up with a sub-90 average - Young hit more than half his doubles so it's not like Jenkins was dragged down too much. Webster managed virtually the same average as Jenkins in round one, nicking three sets in deciding legs against veteran Irish qualifier Mick McGowan. The only breaks came in the second set, with Webster getting two to Mick's one to claim it and move 2-0 up, and it was Webster's finishing that was most impressive, hitting nine from fifteen.

These two have played 11 times, but not since 2012, and I think it's important that Terry has had the better of it when they've played in the big events - he took both games when they were in the Premier League, and Jenkins also won both games when they've met in major tournaments. 1u Jenkins 21/20, I think it'll be fairly close but that Jenkins should be the favourite, which is enough to go for this at odds against.

Next up we have Dave Pallett, who scored one of the upsets of the round to knock out Kim Huybrechts, coming from a set down at 2-1 to claim six straight legs after Huybrechts won the first leg in the fourth to move through to the last 32 for the first time. This might have been easier for Dave, as he missed set darts in the third after the first two sets effectively went with throw, but showed great finishing under pressure in the final set, hitting two ton plus checkouts to secure the best win of his career. Suljovic's game was a bit mediocre early, having shared the first two sets with all ten legs going with throw, before turning on the style and playing as well in the last two sets as anyone's done this tournament, ending up with seven 170+ scores and solid finishing.

I think Mensur's a favourite here, Dave's in uncharted territory and isn't going to fear him, which makes me hesitant to pull the trigger on the Austrian. I think the line is slightly underestimating Mensur, but with it being solidly odds-on as it is, I don't think that it's worth betting just to make a tiny profit. If you're going for an acca just for sweat value, stick Suljovic in

Both of these players came through their opening matches without losing a set, but it was Lewis that likely had more trouble, needing to put in some work to overcome Jan Dekker, who overcome being outscored fairly easily by hitting several big outs, but Adie got the job done in the end with a 164 to finish. Ending with nearly 100, Lewis hit far more big scores and cleaned up solidly. Gilding got past Gerwyn Price winning each of the sets 3-1, neither player scoring profilicly but Gilding managed to do just enough to get more shots at double and hit them at a much better rate and get the straight sets win.

Lewis should win this one comfortably. They've only met twice, but one of them was on TV where Gilding (pre-beast mode Gilding I have to add) didn't win a leg in the 2014 Matchplay. First to four sets is a solid length, I can't see Gilding being able to do it, although he could take a set maybe. Leaving this one alone.

What was billed as one of the best matchups of the first round turned out to be a damp squib, as Wright got past Keegan Brown with a minimum of fuss, the youngster being able to hit a decent amount of 180s but not much outside of that, as Wright rolled off the first two sets to zero, and then overcame a bit of an attempt at a fightback by claiming the third set in a deciding leg. Wright wasn't spectacular, but was professional, when the other guy is playing in such a way where he's going to give you every chance it can be easy for your stats to look poor. Ronny on the other hand got through a fairly dire affair against Dean Winstanley, with Dean's 180 hitting not really being enough as Ronny matched him everywhere else and hit more doubles despite having less chances. It was a poor game which dragged on nearly to a sudden death leg and I think everyone was just glad it's over.

Wright's winning this comfortably. This is a rematch from the same stage last year, where Peter won 4-1 in sets, and that wouldn't surprise me as a result. The only times Ronny's beaten Wright have been in floor events and been close games, he can grab a set but can't play well enough to get past someone of Wright's quality.

Both players came through qualifying opponents in their opening games, Taylor only dropping the one leg against Keita Ono, who had some chances in the first but couldn't get it done. Taylor didn't look brilliant, using a new setup, but still managed 60% on checkouts and just south of a ton overall, which should easily be enough against Painter. Kevin beat Kim Viljanen, who won one more leg than Ono, a combination of Painter playing better than he's done in a while and Kim not doing as well as he did in the prelim putting pay to any chances of a possible upset. If Painter plays that well, and Phil has an off day, who knows?

Our last round of 32 game takes place on Tuesday, as two of the better performers of the first round come head to head, with the prospect of a game against Phil for the winner. King needed to work hard, coming from two sets down to defeat the unorthodox Russian wildcard qualifier Alexsandr Oreshkin. King was playing very well, he just had the odd off throw which allowed Oreshkin to get occasional shots which he hit out of nowhere, and when the game dragged on, King's experience came through. 23 140+ scores to the other guy's five is a show of dominance, even if the scoreline doesn't reflect it. Klaasen on the other hand finished with the best average of the round, ending north of 102 against Joe Cullen, who couldn't do much on Klaasen's throw but otherwise played well enough himself that Jelle couldn't take any liberties. The only break Cullen had was in a set where he had the throw - after having been broken himself.

Line again looks good. Klaasen seems a slight favourite on most metrics. I'm half tempted by a small play on King though, and will watch line movements to see what happens.
