For replacing extra points...

We make it like the NBA Lottery.

Each team has a tube with jersey numbers for their players, one gets drawn from each team's tube, and the two selected players battle it out in some no holds barred arm wrestling on the 50-yard line.

Offensive team gets a pin, they get their extra point, defensive team's player wins, they squash the attempt.

the point is that if you had a playoff, you would have more "bread and butter games". who wouldnt want to see tcu play texas or boise state play alabama?

you can still have the bowls AND do a tourney. or you can incorporate them.

Texas and Alabama each received 17 million a piece for being in the BCS title game this year, is that number going to be significantly higher if there is a playoff? I do not know, and none of you can tell me that you know either.

the rose bowl is played in pasadena california between the pac 10 and big 10. you know how much of a problem that is for most big 10 fans? the rose bowl still finds a way to fill the seats though...

An eight-team playoff also raises the question of which teams should be included. Since college basketball annually debates expanding its 65-team field, how can college football satisfy the masses by going to a four or eight team playoff?

The financial stability of bowl games is also an important point during tough economic times. The Valero Alamo Bowl mobilizes hundreds of volunteers, sponsors, ticket buyers, business leaders and media partners in support of a football tradition that means something to San Antonio. The game gives the city immeasurable media exposure and economic impact during what used to be the year's slowest week of tourism. The same scenario is played out in the other 29 cities that host bowls.

Given the impressive television ratings and crowds watching college football and bowl games, it's my hope fans come to better appreciate the benefits of the current system. Also, if they want to advocate change, they should understand the repercussions on not just the current year, but also on a system that has thrived since the first Rose Bowl on Jan. 1, 1902.

Now are fans more likely to show up to one single meaningless post season bowl game? Or are they more likely to follow a team 3,000 miles all around the country to follow 4 different games?

Of course fans will not do the latter. Now DUCY?
You are either ignoring or forgetting my point that Demand >>>> Supply for bowl game tickets.

i guess that brings me to my unpopular thought:

the rose bowl should have two alternating sites. one in california and one in the midwest.

this is the point. college students on winter break would definitely go to two more college games.

People need to stop pretending working for a school/team is a life decision. It's a job. When a better one comes along, we would all leave for it.

really? broke college students are going to be able to afford to airfaire, travel, dining, hotel, tickets for more then 1 game in multiple locations across the country? you are going to really say that with a straight face?

Maybe most won't or can't attend more than 1 game. Some will, but that's not really my argument. I just think that most of these schools have hundreds of thousands of alums/fans scattered across the country. No top 8 team should have a hard time selling out each game in an 8-team playoff system, regardless of where the games are played.

You really think these games wouldnt' sell out?

I don't know really but if I had a choice of games to go to and it was either a 1v8 game or my team as the 1 seed in the championship game, i am obviously choosing to go to the championship game

you can't see how that can have an impact on attendance?

4. In four years Anderson will be the best player in the world.
5. Drogba >>> Torres and Villa
Yes, but it is WAY closer to 5 then to 1
Maybe as a pure CM, but once you include the DM's such as Essien and the ACM's such as Lampard and Gerrard, no...
Yes IMO...
No, and thats coming from a United fan... Anderson is better then Nani, but I doubt that he is even in the Brazil squad come 2014 WC in Brazil.
Yes, as a one up front format, whereas Torres and Villa > Drogba and Anelka/Kalou whoever...

Second sentence, having relatively low variance, dosent compute with the third sentence, having relatively high variance... FWIW I think the system for MLB, given I dont watch much of it, goes ok...

Twenty/20 cricket will be huge in America in about 30 years time IMO. Its got everything that most Americans want in a sport, superstars, big moments, tense finishes, all within the timeframe of an NFL game. I would love to see it happen...

This as well, and I dont think its unpopular with the majority in saying people need to admit its "for the money"

Some of mine...

- New Zealand will go ok in the World Cup in 2010, getting at least one point...
- Australia will do pretty ****
- England WILL NOT win the World Cup... never...
- South Africa will not host a successful World Cup... something will go very wrong somewhere...
- I would prefer Ronaldo over Messi

- 50/50 cricket will be dead in 20 years... Tests will be to international soccer as 20/20 is to the EPL and other leagues...

But, you don't know if your team is going to make it to the championship at the start of the post-season, do you? 1v8 in college football is a much closer matchup than 16 v 1 in bball. The 8 seed will probably win ~20-25% of the time, I would guess.

I'd think there would be a % of fans that would try to get to any game they could, and a % of fans that would hold out for semi-final or final games. Look at some of the first round matchups we would have had this year... you think fans wouldn't have shown up?

Alabama/tOSU
Texas/Oregon
Boise/Cincy
TCU/Florida

(I can't remember the exact 1-8 rankings before bowl season but I think those are close).

I like the BCS as it is now. Mostly because each week of the regular season is like a playoff. Every team knows that one slip-up, most likely, will end any national championship hopes. You need to win every week and if you don't you can't squeak into the playoff.

Yeah that another reason I like the BCS, makes the regular season extremely meaningful. That's why I have such a hard time watching college bball until March, regular season means absolutely nothing in the grand scheme of things.
