grunching: football/soccer: not really a rule change, but I'd like to see obstruction called more often, especially when a ball is going out of play for a goal kick. You will see a defender making absolutely no attempt to play the ball and just doing everything he can to block the attacker from getting it, play the ball ffs

as long as defender is within playing distance of the ball, no obstruction is the correct call

Absolutely not trolling. I only watch baseball when I'm betting it, and even then I can only watch a few innings. When I am watching though, and thinking about how boring it is, I try to think of why it's so boring and how it could be better/more entertaining. I think if my changes were enacted in the AL only, there would be a ton of resistance at first, but within like 10 years, the AL would be getting twice as high ratings as the NL to the point where the NL was forced to slowly adopt more and more of the changes.

I mean does anyone really enjoy watching the hitters step out of the batter's box every other pitch, and then the pitcher taking 45 seconds to throw to them? Does anyone enjoy watching a team hit in the 7th inning up 5-2? Or for that matter enjoy watching a team bring up their 6-7-8 guys down 5-2 in the 8th? I'm just trying to take the boring parts out and make baseball watchable. I guess I should just give up on baseball, but I really enjoyed it from like age 10 through age 20 before I realized what a ridiculous variance-fest it was, and I think if you did some things to speed up the game and reduce the variance, it could actually be entertaining still so that's why I tell everyone who will listen about my plans to fix the sport.

My dream is that someday I'll be on the cover of Sports Illustrated as the AL commissioner with this headline:

Ian Gordon: Is he killing baseball......

or saving it?

Probably more likely to see a sentence on page 36 of your local newspaper about how Ian Gordon was committed to an institution for wearing a human face as a mask.

in poker seats should be randomized after every hand. that makes it more fair

Once hands go all in on the flop, the pot should be divided based on each hand's equity.

Basebal changes, yo

Kinda like what meshani said but instead what I'm saying:

100 game first half. Wost 7 from each league get eliminated.

Records reset to 0. Final 8 in each league play 28 games- a 2 game home and home against each other team.

Records DO NOT reset. Top 4 advance. 27 games-9 vs each team. Best record from 28 game set plays worst record 6 times at home. #2 seed plays #3 5 times at home. Best record plays #2/3 team 5 times at home. #2/3 team plays #4 team 5 times at home.

Top 2 from both league advance to "World Semi Finals". #1 from both leagues based on the 27 and the 28 game series play the #2 team from each league 11 times. 7 at the #1 seeds home park.

Winners of the semi Finals advance to World Series. 17 game set. If teams come from the same league, best overall record gets #1 seed and gets 11 home games. Same thing if it's the #1 seed from one leauge and the #2 from another. If the winners have the same seed, the best record vs similiar opponents gets 9 games at home.

Winner is World Series Champ.

With the injury rate on special teams, is it practical to make running into the kicker/roughing the kicker penalties an instant dead play? Save some pointless contact perhaps.

bring instant replay to baseball across the board. every team gets 2 challenges per game, and more if they win the first 2.

funny to say a sport is a variance fest yet at the same time say its boring. Boring would be watching the miami heat play the bobcats in a 7 game series. Baseball to me is boring to the extent i cant find time to watch it every night, but i bet if nfl was on every night i would eventually not make time to watch every game of that too. I enjoy watching pitchers pitch and batters try to figure them out, its great.

sport with playoffs: TOO MUCH VARIANCE

bcs uses computers to tell us the two best teams: THIS ****ING SUCKS WE WANT PLAYOFFS

It's boring because who wins one game shows nothing about who the better team is. It's like watching a poker tournament or something. Even in a 7-game series, the worse team's gonna win like 40% of the time. I don't wanna spend 4 hours watching a game to see who gets lucky when the game's going to show absolutely nothing about who the better team is. I find hockey boring for the same reason. Watching Nadal take on Djokovic is epic because you feel like they're battling to see who the best player in the world is right now. Likewise when LSU plays Alabama in football or Oklahoma City plays Miami in basketball. If the Yankees play a 7-game series with the Rangers, no one's going to think that the winner of the series is any more likely to be the better team than they were beforehand. It's just "oh, the Yankees had more balls fall this week". If there were only 2 strikes required for a strikeout though where just putting the ball in play was a challenge, and the top guys came up to bat all the time instead of watering the talent disparity down over 8 or 9 guys, then the cream could rise to the top and the game would actually have meaning.

Players should be allowed to score goals in soccer.

NBA should make games 5 minutes long and that's it. Play like 10 games a night. Every NBA game ever that mattered was roughly tied with 5 minutes left.

Anyone who yells anything at a golf event after someone swings should be kicked out. This includes "MASHED POTATO" "GET IN THE HOLE" "ONE YARD" "BITE" et al.

iggy, I'm not sure you enjoy sports at all from reading your posts. You know sports are entertainment, right? We don't need some omniscient being to tell us all who the best football team in 1986 was. It's about the journey.

In fairness this is not a contradiction at all. In the eyes of iggy they both suck because there aren't enough playoff games.

I disagree that the point of playoffs should be to avoid variance - variance is the whole point of having playoffs. If you want minimum variance, scrap playoffs entirely, combine the AL and NL, and have every team play each other round robin like they do in most soccer leagues. The NFL would be ruined by having a 7-game "Superbowl Series" (if that were possible, hypothetically), that it all comes down to one game is the whole point.

A system without playoffs has the advantage that every game is important and that the best team generally wins. A system with playoffs has the excitement of the playoff games. A system with infinitely long playoff series is the worst of both worlds in that it renders the regular season largely pointless and also avoids the excitement of having everything-on-the-line playoff games where a single mistake or great play can swing a whole season.

*Baseball - Get rid of baseball no one watches it and it's boring. Also stop posting about baseball.

*Soccer - Play with two balls.

*Hockey - Get rid of goalies altogether. Also get rid of hockey it's boring.

*NFL - Get rid of rules against excessive celebration.

*All sports - Legalize steroids.

This is a post about why baseball sucks, not about why it needs longer playoff series or any other alteration.

Thing about sports like football and soccer is, you routinely see people like Tom Brady and Lionel Messi do stuff that it is very clear that only a tiny number of people in the world can do. Watching a star hitter in baseball is exactly like watching a hitter who is merely good. The difference isn't discernable to the naked eye. That makes it not interesting to me. If one team has hitters who bat .350 and the others bat .300, that's a difference, but not one I care about. Having 1000 playoff games so that difference can manifest itself doesn't make it more interesting.
