Only the Spurs can fairly be said to be better overall over that span, but it also could be argued that the Pistons never had the best team in the league during that span, including the year they won. It would be reasonable for them to have no titles or to have three. They happen to have one. They are a legitimate title contender this year, and would be in the mix with the better half of the conference were they in the West. They play badly too often in the playoffs, which has cost them directly and indirectly in late May and June; they've taken games off in the Conference Finals, and they've been less rested than they could have been because of series like this one. That said, winning 13 of 17 playoff series over five years is impressive whatever conference you are in and whether you win more in 7 than 4. Even if they come back and win this, beat Orlando, somehow beat Boston and make the Finals, they're already setting the tone for losing the main advantage they should have being in the East; having an easier first two rounds than whoever comes out of the West.
Agree with all of your sentiments. Nice to see a reasoned post like this here. Just had to argue one point as a Mavs homer...
I think it can for sure be fairly argued the Mavs have been better over this span, and I really think it's probably the Mavs by a small, but decisive margin. I'm too lazy to look up any specific numbers to back up my point, though.
