are you sure that it wasn't your response to sportcenter? It is ridiculously nauseating when they run human interest stories back to back.

from today:

"Sandusky has denied any impropriety in the [shower raping] incident and his lawyer says he believes the defense team has now located the alleged victim, who was not named in the indictment.

"We are looking for the young man involved, who is now in his 20s," Amendola tells Today. "We believe we have found him, and if we have found him, he is telling a very different story than Mike McQueary, and that's big news."

Ugh. Imagining Sandusky and Sandusky's Saul Goodman calling this poor guy with the intent of seeing whether further psychological tyranny is an option...this story sucks.

if anything is nauseating, it's this thread.

Spanier: "Mr. Clinton, BELIEVE ME, we KNOW how to handle sexual misconduct at Penn State.... the stories I could tell you"

Clinton: "Graham, see this? This is my super-excited face. Hilary has never once seen me make this face in her presence. Interns, that is a different story."

it's the rhetoric that's nauseating.

Sandusky deserves to be in hell, there's no question about that.

Obviously there were people who either knew indirectly (Spanier, Curley, Schultz, Paterno, entire PSU coaching staff) or directly (McQueary, HS coach, custodians) who at the time, did or didn't realize that they were enabling him to continue molesting/abusing/raping children.

There's no doubt in my mind that the entire AD, and many other administrators will be fired soon, when PSU completes their investigation. As much as people want the entire university to burn down, the evidence so far does not suggest that this was some conspiracy by 50 people within Spanier, Curley and Schultz's offices to hide a rapist.

if all showers were co-ed, things like this would happen less. had ginger been a girl, she would have saved that kid.

join my nation push to end gender bias and integrate our public shower system

In a related story, one time the PSU students moved the goalposts all the way from South Bend!

Next time a university president tries to cover for the culpability of enabling a serial pedophile we'll try to maintain a more even keel with our rhetoric.

it's indefensible what he released publicly and he's fired because of it.

basically he is hanging his hat on the '98 decision where the police and AD decided not to further investigate.

I can tell you from personal experience that Spanier is out of touch with reality. He's an elitist and deserved to be canned.

How is that even legal, Sandusky and his lawyers tracking down the kid he raped and giving him one last "Don't tell anyone or you'll get in trouble too!" speech. Can't this be viewed as witness intimidation?

Whoa, whoa, whoa. His inaction helped a child rapist to operate for years with the tacit approval of Penn State, but calling him an elitist is just beyond the pale.

I've met Spanier in person before, and my experiences with him lead me to that conclusion.

I don't write that from the dogma in this thread.

There's the remaining issue of whether the BoT can provide the course correction necessary without getting completely independent input from folks who don't know or understand the Penn State way of doing business along with a need to improve transparency.

NY Times does a good summary of the timeline of events

Worth reviewing if you haven't followed everything that closely.

Edit: Heck, it is prob worth reviewing even if you have. It really lays it all out there.

Jesus, can you imagine being assraped at age ten, then you're a sophomore in college and have been trying to suppress this all these years, and suddenly in the midst of a scandal someone comes up to you and says "Hey, I need you to confirm that you weren't actually assraped in the shower, but you were in fact just running around naked with a grown man"?

I mean, the whole situation is so absurdly ****ed that I have no idea wtf I'd say or do in that position.

Spanier was the governing face of the university, and to dismiss him under these circumstances is unprecedented. As such, they are forced to communicate with the public in a non-descript manner, where there is no voice of leadership or clear source of command because everyone in Spanier's office needs to be put under the microscope.

Last thing you want to do is to allow someone to be an interim president and then find out 1 month later that he/she is possibly implicated in ANY manner-- even if seemingly harmless or honest-- with regard to the alleged Sandusky coverup amongst Schultz, Spanier, and Curley.

the BOT has taken a lot of flack recently, but I think they were completely caught off guard. I don't think it's reasonable to believe that they shouldve been running around to McQueary, Curley, Spanier, and Schultz asking them for their deposition regarding GJ testimony. It's simply unreasonable.

Ultimately, I have faith that the BOT will do the right thing in the end, such as releasing reports of independent investigations, but it will take time. It's difficult to make decisions when basically everyone is lawyer-ed up at this point, and any decision you do make will be possibly construed in an unanticipated manner. All of this is just so unprecedented, really.

PSU is a gigantic scientific research arm. For those who are asking for the university to be burned down, I don't quite think people understand how much research and scientific productivity comes out of PSU. I also know of engineering firms (edit: to be clear, scientists employed by psu) that are employed with PSU that conduct proprietary research on weapons and defenses for the military. I had a friend once tell me with a straight face about a specific protocols that they had to follow to avoid documents being read from windows.

I agree. The problem is that the university community thinks Joe Paterno was martyred by gutless bureaucrats looking for cover in a media fire storm. And sadly, to a degree, they may be right. Central PA needs an intervention and it is up to the BoT to figure that out-- not because they are looking backwards, but because they are looking forwards.

So McQ is telling friends he broke up the rape. The GJ summary says he left immediately and mentioned nothing about a break up. If he ever has to take the stand, could he possibly setting himself up for a perjury charge?

probably not, but he's giving Sandusky's attorney ammunition to bring up his Grand Jury statements and point out inconsistencies

Tom Bradley should be thrown on the heap with the rest of these administrative clowns.

Reporter: roughly "Coach did you watch the interview with Jerry Sandusky on NBC and if so what was your reaction?"

Bradley (in a pissy tone): "No I did not I was working on Ohio State last night. I had other things to do."

Talks about joking with Luke Fickell about how rough their situations are, recruiting, "oh we are definitely going to play in a bowl game."

Maybe, but we should bear in mind that the GJ document is not a transcript of his testimony.

That the GJ document says he left immediately doesn't mean that he didn't testify that he broke up the rape first before the GJ. You can't make assumptions based on what the GJ document omits, no matter how natural you think they are. It contains no testimony. It characterizes the prosecutions case.
