Couple thoughts:

1)This is the kind of game lots of people would chalk up to "luck" and "variance" and "inexplicable voodoo magic", and it's not. Alabama didn't miss field goals because of variance, they missed them because they kept attempting field goals their kickers couldn't make. Someone posted before the game that Bama had below-average special teams; when they performed like it, it made the difference. (Now, was AJ McCarron turtling on 3rd down in OT to get pushed out of FG "variance"? That's a good question.)

It shows up in little ways people don't think about. Brad Wing punted in the 1st half and it was downed at the 5. Alabama missed a 51-yard FG on the ensuing drive. A worse punter puts it in the end zone, Bama starts at the 20, and they make a 36-yard field goal. Is that variance, or is that the product of LSU's special teams advantage?

That said, LSU did get lucky to win the game. We got a couple crucial turnovers at the right time. Rueben Randle broke wide open on exactly one play all game and it got us a field goal. (And if Jefferson hadn't underthrown him, it's an easy touchdown. Is that variance?) Alabama dominated us in the trenches, which I totally didn't expect, and which I consider one of the biggest keys to winning and a strength of LSU's against anyone in the country. We couldn't tackle Trent Richardson. Alabama played consistently better than us, but we managed to play just well enough to hang in, and got a couple of big plays at the right times and that made the difference.

I don't know if all that is a testament to luck, or the importance of special teams and big plays, or what, but you're going to have a hard time convincing me any other team in college is close to these two this year. I'm intrigued by Stanford because their offensive line might give them a shot to move the ball like they need to to win. Given OSU's result against K-State immediately after OU's beatdown of them, I'm skeptical of OSU being OU now, let alone LSU.
