It's not downright nasty but it's already hard. This is going to be a US Open day. Anything under E will be good. Guys that hit fairways have an advantage. Some player notes from yesterday.
Tiger's ball striking is on right now. He just does not look comfortable with the putter. Nobody is surprised.
Aphibarnrat is maybe the most fun player to watch live. He just pulls driver on everything. Also he is fatter than me which makes me happy.
Watched Spieth tee off at 5, 11, and 15. He doesn't look comfortable. When he's dominated he kind of just feels on another plane of existence. This ain't it.
Zach Johnson has a real chance this weekend. He's playing Zach Johnson golf at a good level and the course sets up well for him. He was very close to being -4 yesterday.
Finau is a fun sweat for the weekend as he really put the hammer down coming in 16-18 yesterday and seems like he's just got "it" out there. Kind of the opposite of Spieth mentally.
Pat Perez had a nice round but did not like his tee shot at 11. He turned around and screamed "****ing ****y **** ****!" while walking toward a bunch of small children. I kind of love him.
Adam Scott looked like he was completely collapsing on the back 9. Just could not hit any club off the tee. And he was +2 on the back nine in the later part of the day. It was honestly kind of amazing that he didn't shoot 39 on the back.
It's fun to see guys like Todd Hamilton and Calc out here getting after it with the exemption.
Darren Clarke looks really scary bad. Like, 100 lbs overweight and looked like he was hammered. I saw him on 3 and immediately thought he was going to shoot 80. I was wrong, 82.
Thomas Pieters was doing the old "bounce the ball on the iron club face" trick for a solid 5 minutes while waiting for someone to find a ball on five. I've never seen someone so good at that.
The "no readmittance" policy is a bummer. I would love to get off the course and go have a beer/relax in town and then come back but alas. Thanks for nothing, R&A.
Other than that the staff are almost disconcertingly friendly and accommodating. Only the galleries following Tiger (who has like 8 extra stewards assigned to him) get on people.
Funny exchange while watching groups go thru and tee off at 11. A group of 5 quite intoxicated Scottish bros were REALLY enjoying their day and using the Mercedes Benz signs behind the tee box as a bar for their beers.
Steward comes up: "Lads, Mercedes paid 1 million pounds for these signs. Can't be using them as your bar."
Drunk Guy pointing at his labeled beer cup: "How much did Stella pay?"
Steward: *Chuckles and walks away*
Looking forward to D2! Headed out now.
