I guess Carl Lewis was before your time? He was huge in the 80s and 90s. Won 9 gold medals in 4 different Olympics. There's basically zero chance Bolt is even competing by the time the 2020 Olympics is held.

The huge correlation between success across swimming disciplines is part of the reason I have him so low. I admit I had forgotten about him winning so many in 2004 though. The reason I had Bolt/Johnson above him is because of their sheer dominance in some of the most significant events in the Olympics. Phelps is obviously an incredible athlete but the competition and interest in swimming just isn't at the same level as the sprints.

I could see arguments for the top 5 (including Carl Lewis) being in any order and I wouldn't argue too much about it though.

obv I think he's already done enough to be considered #1 but I can understand it if someone else thinks he needs to do it for 3 games in a row to be convinced.
Yes, he thinks that for Phelps, but he puts in a person who has competed in a single Olympic at #2.

And he would have competed in a 5th Olympics, had the US not boycotted in 1980.

Having been reminded of Carl Lewis and Phelps in 2004 I'd probably revise my list to be

1. Lewis
2. Johnson
3. Phelps
4. Bolt
5. Redgrave

context though, lots of swimmers have completely murdered a games. spitz, phelps, thorpe off the top of my head.

no 100m runners have obliterated like bolt did (afaik, but shaving .08 off the WR while jogging or whatever it was - insane), and as he said, it's the most important event

So is the flame actually going to stay in the middle of the stadium? How is that going to work out with the field events? And isn't there some 'rule' that it has to be visible from the surrounding area?

Not an Olympics fan, but I liked the ceremony a lot. The homage to the NHS was genius, Boyle just delivered a massive FUUUUU to all of it's haters. The fact that Americans hated it validates the fact that it was really good.

Thorpe won 5 golds in two Olympics. All in the freestyle. Phelps >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> >>>>>>>>>>>> Thorpe in terms of accomplishments.
