It's to make the start slightly less crowded. They have to run in the outside lanes for half a lap or so, so the distance is still the same.

The ones it front have to stay outside of the first 4 lanes through the first turn. They do it that way so they don't all get tangled up at the start.

All racing would be better with this, remember Road Rash from back in the day? There isn't a better feeling than passing someone and knocking them off their bike with a club just to rub salt in the wound. Actually, kicking them into the path of an oncoming car might be better, but it's close
