Well yeah when its in both teams best interest to throw of course its going to look terrible. Usually at least one team is trying to win so they can make a good show of it.

Its just a terrible format if both teams think its in their best interest to lose.

No. There is nothing redeeming about the way they went about with this. If a ref comes in and says stop losing on purpose or you will get DQ'd and you still do it. Then you have no defense at all when you get dq'd.

meh, so each team steps up their effort to the point where it's acceptable by the ref. whichever team tries slightly less hard still gets an advantage, and they're not punished.

i still blame the organizers.

doesn't change the fact that the format sucks. it's probably not rocket science to figure out how to organize a competition such that it is always in someone's interest to win.

So they DQ'd four pairs, that means the quarter final draw looks sparse with four pairs left. Have they said the other two teams in those groups qualify for the knockout stages?

The format sucks but even taking away the opportunity to tank to avoid countrymen won't solve everything since the Chinese players even when playing each other facing knockout throughout the season often will have their team-chief Li Yongbo dictate the outcome. It can be for ranking purposes, some inside-hierarchy we can know nothing about but worst for their rivals, especially in singles, whoever Yongbo decide is the winner will be saving a lot of energy in a non competitive match gaining an edge in the following rounds.

I do feel bad for the athletes though. The Chinese too. I think their women doubles pair was almost a certain gold. They're the best in the world no matter what.

It's possible of course Li Yongbo himself is also answering to someone higher up, there is obviously huge pressure on him to deliver gold medals and he is seeking every edge, but I do think the "fixing" has been notorious under his reign in Chinese badminton.

The start off man in the time trial has good hands. When I try to make the "3" my hand turns into a claw.

Certainly the likely men's semi-final down the line between Chinese GOAT Lin Dan and countryman Chen Jin will be interesting.

With stakes this high and the likely finalist opponent being world number 1 Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia, who is a favorite against anyone but Lin Dan (who has owned Chong Wei in big final after big final), would be one of those matches where Yongbo Li would definitely find it hard to overlook the physical edge in giving Lin Dan an easier victory before the battle of the titans in the final against arch-rival Chong Wei.
