Pretty tl;dr but I thought this was pretty cool and thought-provoking when I came across it a couple years ago (spoilers):

MVP '05 is still such a fantastic game...nothing has come out on the Xbox since that can even touch it.

Who needs Barry Bonds when you can play with Jon Dowd?

A little.

Helps that Majora's Mask is the better game to play today.

UNDRAFTED is not that difficult. The original is harder.

It has the best opening 30 minutes to a game ever.

I don't remember why, but I never finished Majora's Mask. I feel like it was a pretty good game though, guess I just lost interest. It's obviously no OoT but seems fine here.

i think the single-player of the n64 version took a step backward, although multiplayer was still very strong.

i already had chose a game from the n64 era and i felt like the SNES/genesis era was getting thin, so i jumped on what i considered to be the last remaining elite SNES option available (although it's very possible that i'm overlooking a classic game).

When is the last time you played Mario 1/3/SMW for anything besides a quick nostalgia trip? Did you beat the game? Did you get bored and turn it off relatively early? [I can say for myself I play mario 1 more than the others but also for MUCH shorter time/usually get bored. mario 3 slightly better/usually get through a few worlds then warp to world 8 and get tilted quit somewhere in there, and smw i put in long sessions with friends all the time. THIS IS NOT INDICATIVE OF ANYTHING BESIDES PERSONAL PREFERENCE.]
I'm probably way different than most ITT, but I play old games way more than newer ones. For example I bought the latest Zelda game on release day, played it ~3 hours, and then its just sat on my shelf ever since. I'd say I probably play ~30 hours of current generation consoles per year and ~200 hours of NES/SNES games on my emulator on my computer. With poker, pointsperpossession, going to gym, social life, 2p2 posting, etc. I just don't have time to dive into these massive games that are out nowadays, so I'd much rather sit down and play an old school game for 20-30 minutes at a time.

i'm not sure we're an accurate representation of the average person. most people never heard of chrono trigger, ff3, etc - let alone played them until the console burnt out. on the other hand, everyone owned goldeneye - even those who weren't true "gamers"
Thats much more fair of a statement, but I still think you need to change 'average person' to 'average American.' RPG/adventure games have always been huge in other countries(particularly Japan).

UNDRAFTED was a huge step back for single-player. Check the IGN review. It also got just a 3/5 from Next Generation magazine, which was the most intelligent video game publication of the '90s. For a sequel to an excellent game that brought us a new sub-genre, it was a huge disappointment.

i already said it, but i think it has the most fun racing engine of any game ever. seriously infinite replay value. the newer versions all sucked.

Mario Kart 64 and Super Smash Brothers are both mega-elite games that still have tremendous replay value to this day. It's incredible how inferior all later versions of each game were
