It's going to be fun when Colorado scores that first overall pick.

ooof I just saw the Penguins defensive pairings for their game tonight.

Johnson-Schultz
Gudbranson-Pettersson
Riikola-Trotman

Going to be real tough to make the playoffs with that.

That is horrible.

Pens missing is glorious, even more so than Montreal

Petterson is pretty good, Shultz is pretty good--put them together and that's a good NHL 2nd pairing. What else ya got? Trotman--AHLer. Rikola--24 year old Finn in his first NA season. Not sure what he is, but probably an acceptable bottom pairing NHL defender. And then JMFJ and Gudbranson. Pens going to need to score 5 every game.

Melnyk is the worst kind of superfan owner (Vancouver also have 1 of those btw) who makes all kinds of decisions about the team

like after losing g7 of the ECF in OT deciding that they're a Matt Duchene away from the promised land, so they make an insane trade involving a future 1st rounder, when everyone else in the world can tell that they're way closer to the basement than being a legit contender

Dorion still has the job of GM because he happily goes along with this **** while keeping it to himself that his boss is really pulling all the strings
Melnyk is the worst owner in the league but his influence on hockey ops is way overstated. He's absolutely responsible for pushing star players out because he doesn't want to pay them. But so many of the decisions made by management over the last few years have nothing to do with him. Like:
  • Signing Michalek to a multi-year extension after multiple knee surgeries and him obviously declining
  • Packaging Michalek's terrible contract along with Greening and Cowen to acquire Dion, only to realize Dion can't play like two years later
  • Botched the Spezza trade. The only piece of that deal that's still a part of their organization is Nick Paul, a minor leaguer.
  • THEY BROUGHT IN SCOTT GOMEZ FOR SOME REASON
  • Duchene trade was 100% Dorion. He had been trying to acquire him for close to a year before the deal happened.
  • Trading for and extending Burrows, only to buy him out a year later
  • Signing Hammond to a three year deal after like 25 games in the NHL
  • Trading Hoffman to the Sharks--ostensibly because they didn't want to trade him within the division--only to have the Sharks immediately turn around and trade him right back to the Atlantic for a better return than what the Sens got.

The Zibanejad debacle is the one move that I'd lay at Eugene's feet, because it had everything to do with saving money. Everything else is on Dorion and Murray. Melnyk isn't the "puppet strings" type of owner. He's more like the cooky guy who management has to keep from giving the team a pump-up speech during the intermission of a game.

Interesting (imho) from Pens/Sabres game:
* Hornqvist playing in his 700th game as a last pick in the draft. That is the second most of any such player. Andy Brickley is fourth on that list.
* Crosby ties Jagr for second place in Penguin history with 439 goals.
* Pittsburgh last played Buffalo in November. Only 7 Pens players played in both games.

Did anyone see the offsides that was reviewed and still not called at the end of the Buffalo game that resulted in Sheary’s GWG? I would like some opinions if anyone has any on that.

It was one of those judgement calls where the ref has to decide if the player had control of the puck or not. If he has control it's onside. I think it should have been called offside.
