Wow, MDZ is such a sexy pick this late. Might be one of the steals of the draft.

I thought about him instead of Liles but chickened out at the last minute.

I'm surprised Varlamov is getting drafted at all, let alone now. He's had half a good season.

Same with MDZ, for that matter

MDZ and Varlamov don't have many career NHL games, but:

A) Both are good players for their position.
B) Both are recent 1st round picks with impressive NHL startouts.
C) I'm drafting for the 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 playoffs.
D) One less draftable goalie for my opponents helps my less-than-par offensive situation.

Round 17, Pick 164

Rene Bourque, LW, Calgary Flames

A long time favourite of the SE hockey regs (Triumph especially), Rene Bourque is a perfect fit for my 4th line. The former Blackhawk is a rather remarkable story actually; Bourque is a member of the Metis nation and is currently one of only 9 NHLers of Native descent in the league. The 28-year old native of Lac La Biche, Alberta went undrafted after playing 4 years at the University of Wisconsin, where he improved each season. His senior year was rather impressive, scoring 16 goals and 36 points in 42 games with the Badgers in 2003-04. This type of production convinced Chicago to sign Bourque as an undrafted free agent upon graduation. After spending the lockout year in the AHL, Bourque played 77 games for the Hawks in '05-'06, recording 16 goals and 34 points for a very impressive rookie campaign.

Just when it seemed everything was going Rene's way, his career and life were almost cut short in a freak accident on November 12, 2006 when Nikolai Zherdev's skate sliced Bourque's neck in a game against Columbus. Although he was listed in stable condition immediately after the incident, further examination of the injury revealed that the skate sliced through vital neck muscles and partially gouged Bourque's jugular vein; in other words, Bourque was mere centimeters away from dying.

After a frustrating '07-'08 season, Calgary acquired Bourque last offseason for future considerations. The results were immediate - Bourque scored 21 goals and 40 points during his first season as a Flame, both career highs. Unfortunately, his career year was cut short when Bourque suffered a high ankle sprain in Minnesota with two months left in the season and didn't return until the first round of the playoffs. Bourque's continued his evolution into a top 6 forward this season, scoring 28 points in his first 28 games. He's become a vital component of Calgary's success and will be counted on in the playoffs if the Flames are serious about contending for the Cup.

Bourque is an excellent skater and has above-average hands which has allowed him to assume a bigger role of importance in Calgary. He's excellent down low and does some of his most effective work in the cycle, creating space for himself and linemates. He's also an adept penalty killer who has a knack for contributing the odd shorthanded marker. He'll team up with Stajan to complete my crack penalty killing unit that'll frustrate your superstars to no end. He has top 6 skill combined with bottom 6 work ethic. He's versatile, gritty, hard-working, determined...

He's a good ol' Canadian boy.

Neal - Getzlaf - Gaborik
Cammalleri - Stastny - Horton
Perron - Brassard - Wheeler
Bourque - Stajan - x

Bouwmeester - Burns

Eh, it's been a while and I don't think Geddy is coming back.

Alrighty, I’m going ahead and taking my favourite player. Mason Raymond. Most of you have probably never heard of him until I came on 2+2 cradling his balls in my mouth. I don’t blame you. He wasn’t a high draft pick, he didn’t play at WJH, and he didn’t bust onto the scene. However Raymond does have a skill set that I love. A huge part of his game is overlooked but he is excellent at doing the little things. I’m going to use the word. Don’t try to stop me. He has intangibles.

I’m watching the game right now and he just scored again. Hahahah.

Speed
Speed kills. And Mason Raymond has a lot of it. Raymond is one of the fastest players in the NHL right now. He has an excellent acceleration that hasn’t been seen in Vancouver since Pavel Bure. Quoting Rihanna, Raymond can get from “0-60 in 3.5.” When he’s at top speed it just looks like he’s gliding out there yet he’s able to stop on a dime, change directions and start again. This ability makes him impossible to keep up with and obviously is his forte.

Offense
Raymond can beat you two ways. Firstly he can beat you off the break. Obviously with such elite speed he creates tons of odd-man rushes and he has slowly developed the hands to finish these golden chances. See Van-Caps game. He has the offensively instincts to do dirty things and is capable of dishing the puck off too.

Secondly and perhaps more ninja-ly, he beats you by beating the team. Once inside the offensive zone Raymond has the skating ability and hands to create his own space. He often does his signature behind-the-net skate that creates space as defenders scramble to recover. Then with a simple pass he finds a man with tons of room creating an excellent scoring chance.

He isn't afraid to shoot the puck either. Contary to belief, he actually has good hands and a very filthy (and underrated) wristshot. He is also a very patient man, not afraid to stare a goaltender in the eye and say "Don't blink." Often times you see him holding onto the puck for that one extra second as the goalie tries for the desperado save. Instead you get a flat goalie and a roofed puck.

Defense
Again, this brings us to the point of speed. He is obviously very capable of keeping with the best skaters and has excellent recovery time. He is smart and responsible and makes simple plays. He is also used a penalty-killing option.

However it isn't this insane speed that makes him good. It's his smarts. Often time he streaks in off the wing, his linemates a couple steps behind him and him facing a bad angle. Instead of taking a shot or trying to bust past a 230 pound orge, he simply blasts it low and hard at the goalies pad. This creates a huge rebound 10 out of 10 times and gives our guys a good chance and banging it in. He's also modest enough to pass it off. He just skates around working his ass off and instead of trying to pull off a highlight reel goal he simply passes it 5 feet back. We eventually with all the room get a decent scoring chance off. Raymond just keeps things simple and that's all I can ask for. I've tried to keep this writeup short, I could go on for another 500 words but that's boring. Instead here are some youtube videos.

Speed KILLS BABY!
Cary '5-hole' Price
Stop
"OH I LOVE IT! OH YOU GOTTA LOVE IT LIKE THAT!"
PATIENCE

As for him joining my team, Ribeiro should be able to feed him the puck as he's coming in the opposite side. It's going to be beautiful. Pass, pass, scoring chance. Simple North-South quickness game. *sniff sniff*. Beautiful.

D. Sedin - H. Sedin - Franzen

Terrible pick. Not Canadian.

But good pick, he's a good skater, good faceoff man, good two-way player, great penalty killer, good passer.

Round 17, Pick 164

David Clarkson, RW, New Jersey Devils

A tough guy who can actually play? Go figure. But that's exactly the package that David Clarkson brings to the table. Unlike a multitude of fighters who can only use their hands for one thing, Clarkson actually has a deceptive scoring touch that allows him to contribute offensively on a very good Devils team. His skillset is surprisingly impressive.

Don't believe me? Check this out.

Anyways, Clarkson played all 82 games last year and scored 17 goals...not bad considering he also recorded 164 penalty minutes. He had 7 goals and 15 points through his first 23 games this season before breaking his ankle at the end of November. Unfortunate for the 25-year old from Toronto, but you know how he did it? He blocked a Zdeno Chara slap shot.

Good ol' Canadian boy.

Anyways, broken bones heal and Clarkson will contribute to my team for the next 5 years in a big way. He'll score goals, he'll muck n' grind and he'll kill penalties, but he's also a great deterrent if any of you clowns are thinking about running one of my undersized stars like Cammalleri. He knows how to use his knuckles and I'm not afraid to send him out there to use 'em.

But he's no Rene Bourque.

Team Geddy Lee:

Neal - Getzlaf - Gaborik
Cammalleri - Stastny - Horton
Perron - Brassard - Wheeler
x - Stajan - Clarkson

Bouwmeester - Burns
Kaberle - Hamhuis
Liles - Mitchell

Taking Martin St Louis with one of my picks.

Ya, he's 34 years old. He'll be 40 when this league is done. He's currently a PPG player, and that's while shooting 5% below expectation, is racking up the assists. I think St Louis is special though. He's a bona fide top line player in the 17th round. He has missed two games since 2002. He's an iron man on a Gary Roberts level. I'm much less worried about injury or point drop off with St Louis than some of my younger guys. When he does drop off, he'll probably be reaching the point production of similar players available right now.

Heatley Datsyuk St Louis
Eriksson Savard Marleau
Malone Laich Backes
LW Oshie RW

Streit Wideman
Edler Letang
Quincey

Luongo
