Would have preferred if they instead:

1. Emphasized and untilized the existing rule. They had a rule in place, the refs could call it if they want. Send out the memo, let everyone know you're going to start calling it more, and do so when it's obvious and intentional. There's no reason to remove the discretion of the officials on this.

2. No line changes, like with icing.

3. Rule is waived when you're short-handed. If you can ice it, you can clear it over the glass.

Plus they have this stupid interpretation where they call it when it goes over the glass, but back on to the bench, and they make the call because it broke the plane of going out, or for some reason that I don't even understand. And the worst one, I've seen a couple times where a player clears the puck (while short-handed) down the ice, over the glass on the far end and gets a penalty. He should almost be rewarded for being able to fire a puck 200+ feet while keeping it 30 feet in the air, or whatever.

I know they think they're forcing players to make "skill plays" by clearing the puck without icing it, and without sending it over the glass, while someone is coming down to kill you. And I know they want to add more PP's, and that they don't really care how. It's just so stupid when you get one of those backbreaking penalties at a key time, or when you're already shorthanded, or when no one is around, and it's obvious that the player isn't trying to do that.

So yeah, basically I hate the rule and wish they'd change it. But I'm sure they won't.

columbus really does have the worst announcers ainec.

The play-by-play guy randomly raises his voice, example "there's four minutes and EIGHT SECONDS LEFT IN THE GAME" and of course you check the time because it sounds like he said there's 8 seconds left and something big is going to happen, but nope... 4:08 left and nothing going on.

******ed homerism: The net gets knocked off by a CBJ player's head. The announcers go wild and announce PENALTY SHOT! before realizing the referee is pointing to the face-off circle. Then they say "OH WOW! THE REF POINTED TO CENTER ICE TO ANNOUNCE A PENALTY SHOT BUT THEN CHANGED HIS MIND AND TURNED TOWARDS THE FACEOFF CIRCLE! OMG!" and then on the replay, you clearly see the CBJ player's head/shoulder knock the net off and they say "YUP, BOYLE KNOCKED IT OFF."

Funniest moment: "TORRES TRYING TO CATCH SAN JOSE ON A LINE CHANGE" as he can't even cross the blue line vs 4 sharks.

And very rarely have I seen players intentionally fire it out of play since the rule was implemented.

Like tonight for exampe, Grossman has no intention of putting his team down a man in OT, he's just attempting to make the only play available with Iginla covering his passing lanes: off the glass and out.

If this rule has zero tolerance for discretion, then it has to be video reviewable imo.

I agree with just about everything 72off said.

Obviously the best example is Brian Campbell's heartbreaker in the '06 playoffs.

And you know who said at the start of the season that a series would be decided on that specific rule?

But just to reiterate Triumph, I'm not disagreeing with you, I just hate the revised rule. It's terrible.

i'm totally not in the mood to discuss this, but i will say that i also agree with 72off

the problem with it being a discretionary call is that it's really, really hard to call given all the other stuff going on all over the ice. it's not discretionary for goalies - why should it be for position players?

i'd have it be discretionary in the last 10 minutes of a game and overtime

looks like im in the minority here but i like the rule, keep the puck in the rink. but i do like 72off's piece on allowing during a short-handed situation.

if its discretionary in only the last x amount of minutes, you might as well not even the have the rule...refs would swallow the whistle everytime. they already do late in games especially in the playoffs (but i agree w/ it to an extent).

I have no problem with the rule at all. It'll go both ways, good and bad vs your team in the long run. It was certainly never called when it was discretionary.

I don't really get the argument about not calling it when short handed though. Often when short handed, if you are lucky enough to get control off the puck you often do not have good body position to ice the puck effectively. If they allowed the defensive players to shoot if over the glass, it would kinda defeat the whole point. Short handed is when it's most necessary imo.

I agree with this, and this is coming from someone whose team got 7 of these penalties in the last 3 games.

my feeling is that seriously accidental plays should be washed out, but guys trying to get the puck off the glass in the D zone? [censored] that [censored]. again the devils are the main reason why this rule and the icing rule are now in place, because they did both vs. ottawa an insane amount in 2003. it ruins the flow of the game.

this is a list of goalies i'd want starting for my team in order. i'm kinda baked so there could be outrageous misplacements but i think i like the order here. i might take some bias criticism for lundqvist #1 but i think he squeezes out luongo and it's close. also goalies like price, quick and varlamov project to be higher but atm the youth/inconsistency hurts them in the power ranking.

enjoy
