Coming into this year, he was being thought of as a good addition to the top 4, then got injured, and (lol) supplanted by Kris Russell. Since coming back from injury, he hasn't looked quite the same. Unclear if it's permanent, or he plays worse on a lower pairing due to a questionable partner, or he's just working back into game shape.
Oilers mainly traded him because, despite liking him, they are almost certainly going 7-3-1 in expansion protection, and on D they are protecting Sekera(NMC)-Klefbom-Larsson. In most projections, Davidson was the player expected to be lost to Vegas. A weird benefit of trading him is that it makes it more likely that Vegas will choose to take off one of the players Edmonton would like to dump for salary reasons - Pouliot or Fayne.
Trading Davidson kind of hurts, but is completely understandable. Trading him for an aging undersized centre on the downside of his career is not.
