I can't believe that the Tennessee Titans currently hold the #6 playoff spot at 5-6, including losses to Houston and Jacksonville.

Tennessee holds a few head-to-head wins (Jets, Steelers, Chargers) that could be massively valuable in the end.

That said, their next two games are at Indy and at Denver, so they could easily drop to 5-8 and become really unlikely to make it.

TO BREAK A TIE WITHIN A DIVISION

Two Clubs

Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games between the clubs).
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the division.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Strength of victory.

TO BREAK A TIE FOR THE WILD-CARD TEAM

If it is necessary to break ties to determine the two Wild-Card clubs from each conference, the following steps will be taken.

If the tied clubs are from the same division, apply division tie breaker.
If the tied clubs are from different divisions, apply the following steps.

Two Clubs

Head-to-head, if applicable.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
Strength of victory.

Three or More Clubs

(Note: If two clubs remain tied after third or other clubs are eliminated, tie breaker reverts to step 1 of applicable two-club format.)

Apply division tie breaker to eliminate all but the highest ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. The original seeding within a division upon application of the division tie breaker remains the same for all subsequent applications of the procedure that are necessary to identify the two Wild-Card participants.

Head-to-head sweep. (Applicable only if one club has defeated each of the others or if one club has lost to each of the others.)
Best won-lost-tied percentage in games played within the conference.
Best won-lost-tied percentage in common games, minimum of four.
Strength of victory.

When the first Wild-Card team has been identified, the procedure is repeated to name the second Wild-Card, i.e., eliminate all but the highest-ranked club in each division prior to proceeding to step 2. In situations where three or more teams from the same division are involved in the procedure, the original seeding of the teams remains the same for subsequent applications of the tie breaker if the top-ranked team in that division qualifies for a Wild-Card berth.

NYJ 5-6(2-6 vs conference, 2-2 vs division): vs Mia, vs Oak, @Car, vs Cle, @Mia

Miami5-6(4-3 vs conference, 0-2 vs division): @NYJ, @Pit, vs NE, @Buf, vs NYJ

Pitt 5-6(4-4 vs conference, 2-1 vs division): @Balt, vs Mia, vs Cincy, @GB, vs Cle

Balt 5-6(5-4 vs conference, 2-2 vs division): vs Pit, vs Min, @Det, vs NE, @Cincy

Tenn 5-6(4-4 vs conference): @Ind, @Den, vs Ariz, @Jax, vs Hous

SD 5-6(3-5 vs conference): vs Cincy, vs NYG, @Den, vs Oak, vs KC

bolded = game against another 6th seed contender

head to head tiebreakers(not including situations where one team is 1-0 but they will play again):

Pit > NYJ
Tenn > NYJ
Tenn > Pit
Tenn > SD
Balt > Mia
Balt > NYJ
Mia > SD

Basically, yes. Philly's offence has looked really good since they settled their QB issues, and KC has lost two straight, including one at home against a mediocre team, and struggled to beat teams with backup QBs before that. Also took the Hali/Houston injuries into account.

Honestly, though, the differences between teams 9 through 20 are really small, you could just about draw every team below 6 out of a hat to do rankings. Certainly every team below 8.

Just looking at that list again I think SD gets in. They should be favored in all four home games (KC may not have anything to play for week 17).

AFC playoffs just a mess

you figure it's most likely Denver #1, NE #2, unless DE loses this week in which case NE probably becomes the favorite for the #1.

Cinci and Indy will be #3 and #4 in some order.

KC likely #5 then the impossible jumble at #6

KC @ Cinci / Indy in round 1, result won't surprise me either way
impossible jumble @ Cinci/Indy in the other round 1 game, home team should be decent but not massive favorite there.

This is probably the reasonable approach but ignores SD historically finding gut wrenching ways to NORV a winnable game when it matters the most

Hoping the Colts dodge SD, wouldn't mind playing the Chiefs.

DVOA has 1. Seattle for the first time this year. Per their Twitter, not up on their website yet. Has the whole NFC West in the top 12.

I have no idea who to rank 7-10. Top 6 is so obvious, maybe slight opinions on where to rank those 6. I have:

1. Seattle
2. Denver
3. New England
4. New Orleans
5. Carolina
6. San Francisco

I don't mind division winners getting into the playoffs so much, but years like this are so lol that an NFC East team is going to get a home playoff game when the top 4 teams in the conference are split between two divisions.

do you think the AFC should just go with 5 playoff teams and give someone a bye? it seems like a waste of time

7-10 should include Arizona and KC for sure. Maybe throw in DET / GB (Pending Rodgers) and Cincy too.

I think Cards have a better chance to sneak in ahead of CAR than SF. CAR is still fraudulent enough on O that they will be stuck playing close games and relying on RIVERBOAT. Crabs is back this week for SF.

CAR still has Saints twice and @ATL last week of the year could be dangerous. Jets and Tampa suck, but Tampa playing better lately as Glennon figures things out and the Jets might be fighting for a playoff spot lol.

SF has home games against STL/SEA/ATL and @TB/Cards. I think that schedule is a game easier than CAR's.

BA is a top 10 coach solely on the fact that his off. philosophy is "Throw it deep a lot". With a good QB (Luck) or good WR corps (ARI this year) that wins games.

Can't imagine the success he'd have with one or both of those AND a good oline.

This is probably true, have to get the WRs more first team reps. Losing your #1 WR midyear is so devastating.

So how good is Bruce Arians as a coach? It can't be too crazy to have him rounding out the top 5 can it? Definitely top 10ish.

McCoy
Chud
Trestman
Arians
Chip
Riverboat

seem like the new kids on the block. Top 5 has BB, Payton, Petey (gross), a Harbaugh?, Reid?, Rex?

Where do we rank the new guys? 1 or 2 of them may be in the top 5, and the rest all round out the top 12 for sure imo.

EDIT: LOL. Specifically typed up this "where do we rank Arians?" post to see RT just started talking about it.
