If Rivers wins out the next two and looks good, and Mahomes stumbles at Seattle or home against the Raiders - Rivers deserves it. But it's still gotta be Mahomes' to lose at this point.

I wouldn't downgrade Mahomes for KC's terrible defense or bad playcalling

I could also make a case for Big Ben about as strong as one for Rivers

QBR has Rivers at #3 , Ben at #4.

Pitt has the highest RZ efficiency (77%) in like 25 years

and - there's a usage effect - BR has thrown the ball (580 times) more than any other QB in the league (and he missed half a game), and 130 more times that Rivers

basically, if you emphasize "valuable" he's way up there

What could the ref possibly have even thought he saw here? This was on 3rd and long with the Chiefs up by 14 - massive play in the game.

There should be some way to challenge obviously terrible judgement calls imo. Other sports do it. It's not impossible.

Mahomes should be unanimous MVP based on overcoming every single marginal call going against the Chiefs all season--likely at the behest of Rog for obvious reasons--as Suzzer has been kind enough to document.

Chris Conley or Antonio Gates would be the #2 WR/TE targets on the Saints, is all I'm saying

and now suzzer brings up that brees's best game outside a dome is just 265 yards against the bengals

Chris Conley has 5 TDs this year. The previous 3 years he had 1 TD total.

Take Mahomes off the field and KC is still a pretty good team.

Take Rivers off and the Chargers become 32. Chargers.

Take Brees off and the Saints become the Saints of yore.

It is Rivers vs Brees at this point. Recency bias is tipping the scale toward Rivers for me.

there's also the fact that about 50% of mahomes TDs and yards has come from 3 yard passes which hunt/hill took for a further 52 yards

Mahomes seems to rank among the top in most air yards-related stats, but I don't know about TD specific plays

a) You clearly haven't watched the Chiefs much.

b) What if I told you that hitting receivers in stride, leading them to open areas, and picking targets who have a lot of room to run - are all skills a QB can possess? No really.

I watched Smiff hang our players out to dry so often I thought it's just something QBs do - can't help it. Then this year has been a revelation. Every now and then Mahomes will make an errant throw and leave a receiver open to a big hit - and you realize how rare it is.

yeah mahomes is great and some of it is hitting receivers in stride and picking out targets that have room to run etc, and some of it is throwing a 2 yard screen pass which goes for 65 yards + TD because tyreek hill can run past all of the people

Mahomes has done some magic in the red zone.

Obviously if they have a league average starter in smith as a backup their probably near a playoff team but their current backup is henne who hasn’t played meaningful minutes since 2004. I think mahomes is being underrated. His d sucks, he’s breaking records even with a good team but he’s essentially a rookie.

I’m not a Kc fan or a mahomes fan but every time I watch him he does some amazing stuff and obviously some dumb ass stuff but that’s expected from a young player.

That hasn't really happened this year - although Hunt had some decent runs after catches.

What has happened is some short shovel passes that turned into TDs closer to the goal line. I can think of at least 4.

If people want to go stats I don't see how Mahomes loses.

If they want to go results - the Chiefs have lost 3 games by a total 7 pts. to legit Superbowl contenders. Mahomes is the only QB who's team has been in a position to win every game late. With the 31st ranked defense.

But if he lays an egg at Seattle the door is clearly open.

Effective Yards (EYds): This metric translates DVOA into a yards per attempt figure. This provides an easy comparison: in general, players with more Effective Yards than standard yards played better than standard stats would otherwise indicate, while players with fewer Effective Yards than standard yards played worse than standard stats would otherwise indicate. Effective Yards are not the best way to measure total value because they are more dependent on usage than DYAR.

Mahomes is at 9th best all time DVOA year at the moment.

My eye test swears Mahomes has to be #1 in dropped INT's this season but every QB MVP probably was top 5 there the year they won.

lol'd at QBR Jameis Winston 7th, Fitzpatrick 13th when both have been benched for playing like ass.

Mahomes is fine winning the MVP here, Rivers is okay too, Rodgers has only 2 INT's this year and neither were his fault (though he DID throw one in kyle fuller's breadbasket that he dropped that would've ended that first game, no not salty why do you ask) if GB wasn't ass he'd be in the discussion too. Brees has tailed off at the end. Goff went to total ****.

or we could wait until all 16 games have been played then actually decide who wins that full season award.

Mack missed 2 games or he'd be in this convo too. Still good chance at DPOY.
