I sketched it out quickly, without doing all the work that it would take to calculate the actual compensatory picks, & making certain assumptions about the remainder of free agency, but I'm guessing if the Browns don't sign any qualifying players, they would get at minimum 1 4th rounder, 1 5th rounder, & 2 6th rounders as compensatory picks for 2017.

They let Mack, Schwartz, Benjamin & Gipson go. If they don't sign any qualifying players, they should be able to get 4 compensatory picks back.

Starting with the 2017 draft, compensatory picks will also be tradable for the first time.

Smart teams often try to get as many picks as possible as the draft is considered to be like throwing darts. As such, maybe their value for keeping their own guys was lower than it might have been when not factoring in compensatory picks.

Perhaps they would rather start fresh & build through the draft then pay large contracts to good players who might not be that good by the time they are ready to seriously compete.

It will add even more credence to the theory if they continue to not sign free agents who weren't cut by other teams. Also, curious to see if they will trade down from #2 in draft.

...orrrrr they could just be incompetent.
Playing for compensatory picks is smart, but you don't want to let all your talent just walk away every year. The Browns probably let too many guys go. But perennial contenders do acquire a lot of compensatory picks. The best way to do that is to sign guys to contracts they will play out rather than needing to cut them a year early, and to look at guys who have been cut when are filling out the middle class of your team. If you do those things, you will probably get a decent selection of compensatory picks even after being able to re-sign a fee of your best players.

I agree. The Patriots did some really smart stuff with that to structure Revis' contract so that they would get a compensatory 3rd round pick when he left after a year.

I'm just speculating/making excuses for the Browns because I'm intrigued by the new analytics-based front office. If they are taking a holistic, patient, non-reactionary approach, I am happy to let it play out because I think that's the best thing they can do to actually put themselves in position to compete in a few years.

The Raiders & Jaguars are both in good positions because they built up a lot of good young talent, and now have the cap space to try to compete. Signing Alex Mack until he's 35 does nothing to help your window for when you actually might be competitive.

The Browns are in bad shape because they keep firing everyone, switching schemes, churning the roster, etc. If the new front office has a plan, and the owner is willing to be patient and let it come to fruition, I think it could be fascinating.

Picking 2nd in each round this year, plus probably having a very early pick next year, plus 4 compensatory picks, plus tons of cap room when many teams have shot their load this year...the fans will totally freak out, but I'd be on board.

Speaking of the Browns why is Johnny Football still employed...honest question is it a dead money issue?

They're hoping someone will give them a modicum of draft pick upgrade in a trade + they don't have anything to do with the money or roster spot once they cut him so why rush?

Also, there are dumb rumors that Chip Kelly likes him & the Browns are looking to include JFF in a trade for Kaep.

No one could possibly give up a pick for JFF. If they so desired, what value would you guys put on this? I guess I'd go 6th if I was in charge... but even then I want the out to just cut his ass whenever.

PS- Is there a Skype group for NFL talk like there is NBA from 2p2? I'm bored and getting drunk.

Maybe they could trade up 10 picks from the beginning of round 7 to the end of round 6? There's literally no financial upside to cutting him. His entire contract is guaranteed, except a $250k roster bonus next year, so they pay him the exact same amount if they cut him today or cut him a year from today.

If they do trade him, the other team would pay his $1.2m base salary each of the next 2 years. If you aren't concerned by the media circus, or the fact that he is out drinking every night in LA right now, or the fact that he's a self-entitled, domestic violence committing, douchey alcoholic, that's pretty cheap for a not awful backup QB.

He projects Cooper going 88 to the Bengals in his 3 round mock.

And yeah if the HC or OC of pit had an IQ > 65 that could legit be a top 5 offense OAT. Endless weapons now. It's just insane

Txs. JM...Just from that last line I mean how are the Cowboys not falling all over themselves trying to trade a 6th rounder for him I mean he can't be any worse than Matt Cassel or Kellen Moore.

EDIT: Unless JFF gets suspended for "x" games then why waste trading the pick?

In the same breath LOL CHARGERS. Resign a 35 year old TE who was a shell of himself last year at best. Something something lifetime achievement

I guess the Chargers are more interested in placating their fans as part of damage control than fielding the best team long term at the moment.

Kearse back to Seahawks for 3 years.

Meh at Jermaine Kearse. I was fine with it when he announced his intention to sign elsewhere a few days ago. Very glad we re-signed Jeremy Lane though.

He's still not ****ing her. That would entail a mans penis penetrating a vagina, which is reserved for alphas.
