If he has a decent year it would take 2 to 2.5x as much guaranteed money to control his future for 6 years. Seems like a fine deal to me. Obviously it's gonna be super hard to win a sb with dalton but given what market value is for qbs these days this was a smart play

Assuming the $5m roster bonus just paid was the remaining guaranteed portion (beyond the signing bonus), there's nothing to sweat about Dalton's deal. Like, at all. They could pitch him for less than $10m next offseason if they wanted to. The structure is very team-friendly and nothing like the headlines are making out.

If they see anything in him at all waiting would be dumb compared to this deal. If he sucks and has to be replaced then they're not really any worse off in either case. But if he puts up a solid season he'd require a drastically larger contract next year. And

Why not roll with him a little longer and use your premium picks elsewhere? They've been decent enough in the regular season lately and have a defense, and he's cap-friendly for he next couple of years. And in the off chance he steps it up and hits those incentives he'd be a bargain.

Man the panthers are going to suck this year. Without looking at their roster salaries, knowing they are right at the cap, who the **** makes so much? Is everything really tied to two old, injury prone rbs? Two defensive lineman? I mean my god, their secondary is garbage now, wrs are grocery baggers (may as well be) and everyone retired on their ol. I'd be surprised if they win 8 games.

Panthers really suck at contracts.

Charles/Hardy have ~30M combined cap for this year.
Olsen 7.8M
Kalil 7.2
Deangelo 6
Stewart 4.5

The issue is they have 8M in dead money for Beason, 5 M for Steve Smith as well and 4.5 for James Anderson/Jordan Gross. Per Sportrac they have 18.9M in dead money contracts which seems insanely high.

The sad thing is those are all Hurney deals. They fired him almost two years ago and he's still killing their team.

Carolina really needs to bring in a contract expert. They have so many huge cap hit contracts in comparison to some of the smarter contract teams in the league. 2015, Charles will have a 17M hit to the cap, they'll need to sign Hardy and potentially sign Cam long term and they have little space without that much talent. They aren't even paying Luke that much yet, expect him to be in the 10M range when he re-ups.

They'll never do what you're implying. I'd love to hear an example of a team extending their perceived franchise QB in his prime to a 6 year contract with gtd. money, and then cutting him loose the following year because he was awful. Bengals won't let him go, and they'll be rolling with Dalton for the next handful of years regardless of his performance level. It's not an lol at the contract terms, it's an lol at the Bengals not hard pursuing other options at the most important position in football. They avoid bringing in anyone so they can continue to take the stance of "well who are we gonna replace him with?", he continues to be the best option.

Point being, by signing him to this contract, they'll be sticking with him years longer than they should have. The only thing that saves them is if Dalton progresses.

If he sucks this year, they won't replace him. Where as, if his contract was up there's no way they'd resign him, and they'd be forced to hard pursue other options at the QB position.

The Bengals can get out of the Dalton extension after two years with no dead money. It's actually pretty well-structured to allow them to keep looking for an upgrade and cut ties with Dalton when they find it.

The deal is fine. Everyone looks at the total amt of the contract and thinks that's what he's getting.

If Dalton sees all of that money, it probably means he won some playoff games.

Let's be honest they aren't really looking for an upgrade to cut away. The contract just prolongs the Dalton experience. As the window continues to close.

Contract is obv fine but I think the structure tells us that the FO has the plan you describe. I can see the thought that Cincy has committed to Ginger and will be afraid to cut him, but I see that deal as a good compromise and a recognition that they are willing to drop him.

Having a youngish franchise QB who is in the 8-15 range is just a super tough spot to be in. It's hard to let a guy like that walk but at the same time you have to pay them pretty well and then it makes it hard to spend draft picks looking for a replacement. You'd almost rather have garbage especially if you have the 13-15th best QB, and then just try to strike gold in the draft.

It's where Flacco and Schaub were. Flactard went on a ridiculous run but kinda sucks but they had to pay him and extend him. Same with Scrub a couple years ago. It was obvious he was hovering in the 12-15 range but Texans were a playoff contender so they had to extend him. And now here we are.

I mean if you are Cincy GM do you really have the balls to cut Dalton after last season? That would basically be insane, considering the team is making the playoffs with him and possibly not without him.

There are entire franchises that haven't had a franchise QB in like a decade.

Hey Michael Sam touched the QB everybody! Weeeeeeeeee! GTFO!

The way they are covering him would be like if when Titanic came out they started promoting who the key grip was.

Anthony T. Marra was a great key grip on Titanic. Don't knock him.

$17 million guaranteed ain't ****. If he sucks, it's an easy cut. If he's good, he'll get more.

Yeah, the lolz in Dalton's contract aren't in the contract. It actually does seem to be decent for the team, and even for Dalton. The lolz will be in how the team operates now that they have that contract, esp. if they, e.g., completely ignore the QB position for the next 3 years.
