Yeah, there's a lot more nuance to it. Some guys will have easily cuttable contracts with limited to no guarantees, while other teams will have to get more creative, but just kind of interesting to look at. Would have to do a deep dive on any individual team to see if they have actual issues going forward or not.

The Lions have so much room because Stafford/Ziggy/Ngata/etc. are in the last year of their deals.

Hmm...Falcons might have some actual issues...they're almost $7m over, & included in the people in the last year of their deals is:

DT Poe
DE Clayborn
K Bryant
WR Gabriel

Matt Ryan has basically 1/$21.65m after this year on his deal, so I'm guessing maybe they extend him at a lower 1st year hit & save some $ there.

Julio has a cap hit of $13.9m, but I don't really see them messing with him much. Matthews has the $12.5m 5th year option...I don't think they can do much with that. Don't really see much to work with on Mack/Trufant/Alford...would only save $3.2m by cutting Sanu...

I don't know. I just don't see where they're going to free the $ up from to not get worse in 2018? I'm not a professional, though, so I assume they see a path.

Levitre, Matthews are the two obvious ones you missed on that list. Levitre only has a 1.5 dead, Matthews has 0 dead and 12.5M coming.

The NFL salary cap is literally setup for the biggest idiots to have a hard time ****ing it bad enough to have anything other than minor issues.

I mentioned Matthews, but they can't really cut him can they? I mean they could, but it would hurt. Levitre would clear $7m, which would help, but I think he's been quite good, hasn't he? Graded 13th among LGs last year.

We're really seeing the Saints' model of "hand out a bad free-agent contract, eat a bunch of dead cap room, restructure contracts to kick the can down the road" really start to pay off*

I don't think it would be hard to convert some of Ryan or Jones' salaries into bonuses that can be kicked down the road to 2018 or even later in Jones' case.

I thought Matthews' salary was guaranteed as it's a fifth-year option on a first-round rookie contract.

Ryan they'd have to extend to push down the road. I'm dumb & forgot it was base salary that could be converted to a bonus, so you're right, they could definitely kick the can on Julio.

I think those 5th year options are only guaranteed for injury.

Pretty stupid when you factor in that there were multiple witnesses that heard the gold digging ***** scream "I will ruin your career" at him when he dumped her.

I love how the legal system can decide that there's not sufficient evidence to charge someone with a crime, yet the NFL can. Roger gon Roger.

There are two separate trades:

SWat to the Rams for EJ Gaines + a 2nd rounder

Ronald Darby to the Eagles for Jordan Matthews + a 3rd rounder

So they got significantly worse at two positions, but got some draft picks for next year. Maybe McDermott is one of those guys who doesn't like personality people?

That actually looks like really good value for Sammy considering that's going to be a top 40 pick & he was going to be a free agent, but really bad value for Darby because Matthews is also going to be a free agent, & Darby is quite good iirc, & cheap for 2 more years. Gaines also in the last year of his contract.

So hierarchy-wise on those trades:

Eagles

Bills

Rams

Bills must be going for that 1st draft pick
