even though in game strategy not as important, there is still a big edge available. almost half of nfl games are decided by 7 points or less, and one-fourth by 3 or less.
all nfl coaches are outstanding football coaches, but very few, if any, are outstanding at 4th down and so forth. big edge available in a league with so many close games.

Yeah, but perfect in game decision making won't matter a **** if your Monday to Saturday coaching isn't up to scratch. Getting teams to consistently be in positions where in game decision making matters is absurdly difficult. If I had to choose between a great X's and O's guy / motivator who does idiotic things on gameday or a super clued in strat dude who falls short when it comes to the actual coaching - the decision is incredibly simple.

Eventually some Franchise will hire a guy who has sole responsibility for certain aspects of in - game decisions. But it is the stuff that we would all be horrendous at (apart from Needle ) that actually matters.

Plz change thread title to "NFL Head Coaches Ranked 1-32 Based On Their In-Game Decision Making"

Then put Coughlin in the top 5.

Otherwise it's bull****. Can't imagine being able to evaluate head coaches when they haven't even played a full season.

John Fox has as many Super Bowl appearances as Raheem Morris has wins and he's 5 spots behind him.

Um, Coughlin deserves to be nowhere near the top 5 for in game coaching, way conservative. Witness last week where they played the field goal and ran the ball on 3rd and long rather than try and put the game away with a touchdown.

Lovie Smith should be in the bottom 10% easy. doesnt make halftime adjustments, makes stupid challenges, stubborn in thinking that his system can work with any player he plugs in, is the least motivational person ive ever seen, i dont think he's human, he has no emotions

I agree with that list for the most part, except Schwartz is way too high for now, Reid should be way higher IMO, he's probably 5th. After you get past the top 15 or so, they all suck, not a huge difference between someone like Marv Lewis and Norv Turner, they're all basically replacement level coaches.

Not to mention he's totally and utterly gutless and refuses to bench/replace a player he made a prior commitment to no matter how bad they are playing, as seen with Orlando Pace still starting at left tackle somehow and Adam Archuleta starting nearly every game 2 seasons ago

It's cool that coaches like Tomlin and Singletary aren't really on the same scheme level as someone like Rex Ryan or McDaniels, but are so good at getting their players "up to play" that they can still easily compete. Tomlin and Singletary seem like the best motivators in the league to me. Compare them to someone like Dick Jauron, who I imagine nobody would want to play for.

maybe they're better at scheming than you are giving them credit for? trying hard only gets you so far

edit: that or they just have superior talent

Sean Payton is a bit of an in-game idiot, but he at least goes for it when it's necessary. Still he's done some of the stupidest things in a game ever. Double Reverse to ice the game? Timeout to challenge something? omg fail

What? Fisher has consistently gotten teams to overachieve and has built teams up several times - no mean feat. Frankly, I think he's top 5.

Let's define ranking 1-32 as "guys I would want to hire to coach my favorite NFL team". I put him top 5 no question.
