I like that the big question mark for Bama is "well they didn't beat A&M by 70 so who knows if they're actually good or not."

How can it be "awful" to have Oregon #1 when they've been pretty much perfect the entire season? Nicholls State was the only true cupcake they faced, and even they beat FBS Western Michigan before Oregon torched them 66-3. Otherwise, Oregon's been taking decent teams and making them look like they don't even belong in the FBS:

Virginia in other games: 2-2 with a win over BYU
Virginia vs. Oregon: Lost 59-10

Tennessee in other games: 3-2 with losses to Florida and Georgia by a combined 17 points
Tennessee vs. Oregon: Trailed 59-7 entering the 3rd quarter before ultimately losing 59-14

California in other games: 1-3, lost to AP #19 Northwestern by 14, AP #4 Ohio State by 18, and Washington State by 22
California vs. Oregon: Trailed 55-3 in the 3rd quarter before ultimately losing 55-16

Colorado in other games: 2-1 with a 14 point win over Colorado State
Colorado vs. Oregon: Trailed 55-17 at the end of the 3rd quarter before ultimately losing 55-17.

Again, Oregon's just DESTROYING all these teams in 3 quarters. Meanwhile, Alabama let Colorado State stay in the game until the 4th quarter, gave up 42 points to Texas A&M, and got outgained by Virginia Tech. There's just no way they've played anywhere near as well as Oregon thus far, and to be honest I'm not sure they're capable of playing at that level. The only real "statement game" they had was the shutout of Ole Miss, and even that was a 2 possession game with 6 minutes remaining. I'd put Alabama #3 behind Florida State before I put them #1.
Opponents records:

Alabama
Virginia Tech (5-1)
Texas A&M (4-1)
Colorado State (2-3)
Ole Miss (3-2)
Georgia State (who cares)

Oregon
Nicholls St.* (who cares)
Virginia (2-3)
Tennessee (3-3)
California (1-4)
Colorado (2-2)

I think it's dumb to say one team is for sure better than the other at this point (although alabama is probably better) but it's the national title game I want to see the most right now.

I actually thought about dropping Ohio State out of the Top 5, but it didn't seem right to move them below Clemson the week that Georgia got exposed, right after they beat a ranked team on the road. The one team that I kind of feel should be above them is Baylor, but something about the school history makes me scared to rank them that high until they face a little better opponent.
how can you, in the same post:

1) punish clemson for georgia appearing to be worse
2) punish northwestern for bad close wins
3) not punish ohio state for almost losing to northwestern

seems like i'm missing something.

It's just my opinion. I give a lot of weight to his 46 starts as a top -calibre qb in a lot of big games with a generally weak O-line compared to 5, however impressive.

Ohio State in the top 5 is still really really terrible

Hell, top 10 might be really terrible

Baylor's O is better tham A&M's O, which put up 42 (and 8.8 YPP) on 'Bama. I don't know if there's any defense in the country that can slow Baylor down (or maybe there's lots, can't really say until Baylor plays someone with a pulse). Hypothetically speaking, though, if there is one and only one defense that can slow them down, it's safe to say that Alabama isn't the one.

i think that remains to be seen. bama would be able to pressure petty, just like they did to JFF. Not sure Petty would handle it as well as JFF did. Baylor has the better non QB scramble run game by quite a bit though.

Ummmm, Georgia State is absolutely a true cupcake. Their probably underdogs to Nicholls St. if they play at GSU tomorrow.

Alabama 12-1
Oregon 13-0
Clemson 13-0

Clemson vs. Oregon

with Alabama very, very close third and SEC folks with major jimmies rustled.

That assumes the games go pretty standard, I mean if Clemson or Oregon has some squeak by a terrible opponent OT win at some point it could cost them in that scenario.

partly depends on who 12-1 'bama loses to. Is it LSU (but to hurdle LSU, LSU would need to lose another game to a west team, right?) Is it a team out of the east in the conference championship? That would prob need to be FLA or GA if they somehow run the table, but that champ. game loss might be tough.

Oregon would have beaten UW, Stanford, UCLA, and the south champ in the Pac12 title game (UCLA again?) to be 13-0

Clemson would have beaten UGA, FSU, and USCe and probably either Miami or VT in the championship game to get to 13-0

OSUe would have beaten Whisky, Mich, and the legends champ in the title game to be 13-0.

without a whole lot of deep thinking it seems it would be UO and Clemson?

Clemson v Oregon, and it won't even be a discussion.

There is no game that bama can lose the rest of the year and have it still be "okay"

They only play 2 more ranked teams the rest of the year, and if they lost to LSU then LSU would have to drop another game as well.

A better question is 12-1 LSU - their loss was on the road, close, early and to a good team which is as "excusable" as a loss can get, and they still could beat UF, then win @ Bama, then A&M then could get a 11-1 UGA team in the SECCG and avenge their one loss.

I think a 12-1 LSU team might be only behind an undefeated Oregon/UCLA/Stanford, undefeated Miami/Clemson/FSU, and undefeated Oklahoma.

there's no way you could put in a 1-loss SEC team over Oregon, who is just way too ****ing good, plays in a conference that is way too ****ing tough, and who beat the **** out of the only SEC team they played.

ditto Clemson, which will have tons of marquee victories, including two wins over top-tier SEC teams.

A better question is:

12-1 LSU, who will have beaten TCU and a meat-grinder of an SEC schedule, or 12-1 UGA who will have a lighter schedule, but potentially ending with undefeated Bama, and who also plays a really tough noncon versus:

12-1 UGA/LSU
12-0 Louisville
12-0 Ohio State
12-0 Baylor or Texas Tech

seems pretty clear that a 1-loss Pac-12, SEC or ACC champ woudl get in over Louisville, probably wouldn't get in over tOSU as much as they really should, but I really don't know about Baylor or Texas Tech.

Also, what if Mizzou somehow went undefeated? They don't face Bama or LSU in the regular season, and played cake in the noncon, but presumably would have a marquee win in the SECCG

Oh, and with all due respect, I really wish Iggy would quit defending UO ITT.

All I need now is Riverman entering the thread to proclaim that he bet the house on UO w/out points as his freeiest of monies bet of the century.

lol big 12 though. OU, TT, & Baylor w/out the benefit of a conference championship game? other than playing each other, the only remotely challenging game is OU 'playing' ND.
