No. 6 Ohio State (-6.0) vs. No. 11 Dayton, Noon ET, CBS
Buffalo, NY - South
TV crew: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Allie LaForce

Quote:
Maybe the best perimeter defense in the country, OSU holds opponents to an incredible 29.4% from 3. What they have in 3pt defense, they lack in 3pt offense where they have been bad this year with their star LaQuinton Ross being their best perimeter shooter at a pedestrian 36%. This speaks to the bigger problem they have scoring in the half court at all.

Dayton isn't as good as OSU, but they have great depth and good 3pt shooting with Jordan Sibert leading the way.

This is an obvious problem for Dayton, who shoots the 3 pretty well and especially needs that out of their biggest scoring threat. Dayton lacks any significant inside scoring presence, which is what you need to get to OSU.
No. 2 Wisconsin (-13.5) vs. No. 15 American, 12:30 p.m. ET, TruTV
Milwaukee, WI - West
TV crew: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Lewis Johnson

Quote:
American is a weird team. They play a VERY slow pace (even more so than Wisky!) but they also turn it over a ton, which is very bizarre. They are a good defensive team who defends the 3 well and is led by senior center Tony Wroblicky protecting the rim.

Wisconsin is a very good offensive team. They almost never turn the ball over (12.6 Turnover %, 2nd in the country) and they shoot well all over the court. They also play a slow pace, but they aren't as low scoring as Wisky teams generally are thought to be. Junior center Frank Kaminsky is very good and I think it's just gonna be too touch for American to score enough here with a pretty bad offense vs a good defense.

Side note, O/U here is 120.5. American is a VERY slow pace team, but Wisconsin has regularly been in the 70s and 80s for the last couple months. I think their reputation is preceding them a bit here. I like the over. American is going to get smashed.
No. 8 Colorado vs. No. 9 Pittsburgh (-6.5), 1:30 pm. ET, TBS
Orlando, FL - South
TV crew: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Kristine Leahy

Quote:
Colorado isn't a tournament team without the outstanding Spencer Dinwiddie, who looked on pace to be a POY type guy before the heartbreaking injury.

They've just been terrible since he went down, and Pitt is coming off the ACC Tournament where they played pretty well before losing to Virginia by only 3. Would be a big mistake to pick the Colorado upset here.
No. 5 Cincinnati (-3.0) vs. No. 12 Harvard, 2 p.m. ET, TNT
Spokane, WA - East
TV crew: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jaime Maggio

Quote:
Finally an interesting game! Cincy has a great defense and it's no surprise they had no bad losses this year because of it. They even had one great win @ Louisville. On the other end they have a POY candidate in Sean Kilpatrick who can get really hot and Justin Jackson who has played well late. A lot of "senior leadership" on this team.

Harvard is quite good though and a very strong 12. They shoot the three well and defend all shots well on the other end. Kenpom doesn't have any are they aren't pretty good at, and their season reflects it. Outside one horrific loss @ FLA Atlantic by 15, they've played every loss very close and won all but one conference game.

They don't shoot many 3s, but have one player (Rivard) who is a complete 3pt specialist who can fill it up when needed.

I think it's close, but I think Cincy is too big/physical probably and wears Harvard down in a long close game.
No. 3 Syracuse (-13.0) vs. No. 14 Western Michigan, 2:30 p.m. ET, CBS
Buffalo, NY - South
TV crew: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Allie LaForce

Quote:
Another upset special in the works? Cuse has lost 6 of their last 8 and has looked bad doing it. CJ Fair is one of the most overrated players in the country (some people still think he's good!)

WMU isn't very good, but they do have a legit big in Shayne Whittington that can give teams trouble. He's pretty dumb from what I've seen, but is good around the rim and a good rebounder.

I think it's a favorable matchup for Cuse. WMU doesn't have a particularly good offense that will give Cuse trouble, so they can prob still win shooting their usual mid 40% from the field. I think Ennis/Grant have to play very well to give them any kind of run after this, because Fair is just what he is.
No. 7 Oregon (-5.0) vs. No. 10 BYU, 3 p.m. ET, TruTV
Milwaukee, WI - West
TV crew: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Lewis Johnson

Quote:
7. Oregon vs 10. BYU

Boy I'll be glad when we move to east coast teams.

I don't know much at all about BYU, but I love the Oregon offense and the balanced 3 point attack they throw on you. Moser/Young are just a lot of fun to watch. Also BYU just lost one of their more important players.

Seems like an easy Oregon choice here. Wish I had more.
No. 1 Florida (-21.0) vs. No. 16 Albany, 4 p.m. ET, TBS
Orlando, FL - South
TV crew: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Kristine Leahy

Quote:
Who has watched Florida? This isn't worth writing up.
No. 4 Michigan State (-14.5) vs. No. 13 Delaware, 4:30 p.m. ET, TNT
Spokane, WA - East
TV crew: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jaime Maggio

Quote:
Tough beat for Delaware. MSU healthy is not a 4 seed or even close. MSU wins/covers.
No. 7 UConn (-5.5) vs. No. 10 St. Joseph's, 6:45 p.m. ET, TBS
Buffalo, NY - East
TV crew: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Allie LaForce

Quote:
Shabazz Napier has surprised me the last two years. Was not a fan of his at all early in his career, but he's made marked improvements to become a high volume and efficient offensive player.

That's where the good news ends of UConn's offense mostly. Their defense however, has been surprisingly good and they have the wildcard of Brimah who is one of the country's best shot blockers.

St Joes plays behind one of the most prolific (and good) shooters in the country Langston Galloway and are coming off a win versus a very good VCU team.

St Joes is coming in +4 and I think I like that side, should be a close game and if Galloway gets hot, they could run away with it late.
No. 2 Michigan (-15.0) vs. No. 15 Wofford, 7 p.m. ET, CBS
Milwaukee, WI - Midwest
TV crew: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Lewis Johnson

Quote:
I have some personal bias to Wofford and will be rooting for them, but the only way to beat Michigan is to take advantage of some defensive shortcomings, and Wofford isn't built for that. UM looked bad vs MSU, but they'll be fine here. Their offense is just really great and Wofford isn't really that good at anything.
No. 5 Saint Louis (-3.0) vs. No. 12 North Carolina State, 7:15 p.m. ET, TruTV
Orlando, FL - Midwest
TV crew: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Kristine Leahy

No. 5 Oklahoma (-3.0) vs. No. 12 North Dakota State, 7:15 p.m. ET, TNT
Orlando, FL - Midwest
TV crew: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jaime Maggio

Quote:
Oklahoma is a good shooting perimeter team who does everything good on offense and average on defense (at best perhaps). Their best win this year was home vs Iowa St, but other than that generally lost to better teams and beat worse ones.

North Dakota St has been on a tear for the last month behind the two headed monster of Taylor Braun and Marshall Bjorklund. The conference final was the first close game they'd played in over a month, and I really tend to like teams going hot in to the tournament with two legitimate offensive weapons.

I like the 12 upset here and definitely like them at +4
No. 2 Villanova (-16.5) vs. No. 15 Milwaukee, 9:15 p.m. ET, TBS
Buffalo, NY - East
TV crew: Verne Lundquist, Bill Raftery, Allie LaForce

Quote:
Another walk. Nova is very good on both ends and Milwaukee doesn't have a star or do anything particularly well other than get to the line. They had a nice conference tourney run but ended the regular season really poorly. Hard to say how "hot" they really are. Nova too much offense there.
No. 7 Texas (-2.0) vs. No. 10 Arizona State, 9:30 p.m. ET, CBS
Milwaukee, WI - Midwest
TV crew: Ian Eagle, Jim Spanarkel, Lewis Johnson

Quote:
Texas rebounds and defends inside well, two qualities I usually like in a team to make a little run. Holmes is a really nice player, but man Isiaiah Taylor is a mess. A 48 TS on 25 USG is just badadad.

Jahii Carson hasn't exactly been very efficient on the other team though, but I think he's a better player now than Taylor. I like ASU's size to match up too with the huge Jordan Bachynski inside.

Like ASU a good bit here.
No. 4 Louisville (-16.5) vs. No. 13 Manhattan, 9:45 p.m. ET, TNT
Orlando, FL - Midwest
TV crew: Brian Anderson, Dan Bonner, Kristine Leahy

Quote:
Defending champs closed season strong, playing outstanding in the conf tourney. Russ Smith is playing on another level lately and they are a really good offensive rebounding team.

Manhattan has had a nice run of late and George Beamon can score, but this is a tough 4 seed they ran in to.
No. 4 San Diego State (-6.5) vs. No. 13 New Mexico State, 9:55 p.m. ET, TruTV
Spokane, WA - West
TV crew: Spero Dedes, Doug Gottlieb, Jaime Maggio

Quote:
Have seen very little of these west coast teams so would appreciate guest feedback.

SDSU obviously has a great defense and NMST looks to have a good offense and a ton of size. In fact, NM ST could be the biggest team in the tournament. However, I don't generally bet small conference schools against elite defenses, so I think I'd feel safe picking the SDSU money line here.
Let's go

Yep. Top 2 Thursday of the year (1st or second depending on how good the games are and how good the Masters opening round is). Thanksgiving ain't even in the same area code and even though Christmas is a Thursday this year that trails too.

OH MAN WE SO EXCITED

Somehow this actually looks like a semi-AIDS filled first round slate, but it's March Madness so the chances it actually is anything resembling AIDS is pretty much 0.

Great OP.

What are the bets for today? Louisville -16.5 seems freeish. Lville buzzsaws bad teams, and Manhattan a) play a high tempo and b) are ranked 315th in total turnovers playing a .487 Pyth schedule (167th-best in the nation). They force a bunch of turnovers and generate a bunch of blocks, but that seems unlikely to translate vs. Louisville's multiple ballhandlers and quick ball movement. I have Louisville rolling this one.

16.5 is such a high spread i hesitate to call it free...but i got the cardinals handling business.
