SMU is apparently going(once the season ends) after Morris with Herman as their second choice. Where did SMU get money like that?

Chad Morris and Tom Herman, offensive coordinators at Clemson and OSU, respectively? Morris is like the top paid assistant in NCAA. Those guys are rumored for Power 5 jobs.

Cause they are a private school?

They haven't been able to pay their players for the better part of 30 years now. If they invested that money wisely, with compound interest, I imagine they must have a nice nest egg right about now, perfect to splurge on a coach.

Still though BYU embarrassed them last year and they weren't ready? You need to be a motivator first and foremost. Can't come out that flat at home. Strong is square peg round holeing it right now. He's not adjusting to his personnel or conference, and it's going to cost him big time. We also don't know how crazy strict his rules and ideals are, maybe he's booting these kids off for reasons 95% of coaches wouldn't. Can't survive in a big conference doing that, he's used to playing 2-3 "tough" games a year, not half a dozen plus.
Just want to point out that, technically, you actually do want a square peg to go into a round hole, or else it won't really stick. Try hammering a round peg into a round hole sometime if you don't believe me.

SMU is terrible and not trending upward, he probably felt like it was that or be fired.

And thus endeth the Run and Shoot afaik.
Doesn't East Carolina still run it?

SMU started the first two games of the season
45-0 loss @ Baylor
43-6 loss @ North Texas

That is the start to a coach getting fired season.

Sounds like june jones was an awful recruiter but he got them to 5 bowl games in 7 years.
SMU has academic requirements so it's a tough job despite the favorable location. It's a job that could be decent though given their locale advantages and the fact they could get into the B12 if the program ever got good again.

it's probably a better job than some of the upcoming P5 jobs (looking at you B1G)

Some oil men don't trust their daughters at UT.

Morris is going to get a big time job soon. I'm sure there is a price for him to go to SMU, but I don't think they're going to pay it.

They really don't. If you are an athlete or have money, you get in. They do not have any minimum academic requirements. They have a lot of wealth and could turn into a Baylor with the right hire.

Isn't SMU absolutely loaded? At least they're fairly well known for having a very wealthy student body, and I'm sure the boosters are no exception.

Either way, I don't think the cash is a problem for them.

Hard to turn into a Baylor when you're trying to convince recruits to come play against UConn and Houston instead of Texas and OU. But they could be Cincy or Boise if they get their act together.

They paid Jones 1.9 million last year and Brown's total package with incentives was 2.85 million last season. Money is no object to them.

I just can't imagine going to SMU when random mid-tier power conference schools will be hiring and would snap up Morris at a pretty decent salary. 2M was year is a lot for Conference USA but not for the SEC or Big Ten.

But why hasn't any of the teams from a major conference hired him yet? I'd take 3 mil a year from SMU in a heartbeat if I were him. He could also end up at A&M after Sumlin leaves for Dallas.

Morris is going to be at the top of the list for nearly any job that opens after this season. Gotta think that he can set his sights a lot higher than SMU.

The combined list of young/upstart non Power 5 coaches and assistants who are more valuable than the head coach is fairly small.

He pretty much heads this list. Probably best to go after the best Big 12/10 job available.

Morris would be cool but he's not a MICHIGAN MAN

Other than HARBAUGH, these are my hopeful candidates for the Michigan job:

Greg Roman
Dan Quinn
Jack Del Rio
Pep Hamilton
Rocky Seto
Nate Hackett
Jeremy Pruitt
Chad Morris
Scott Frost
Bud Foster
Phillip Montgomery
Kirby Smart

Kirby, Foster, and Pruitt are pipe dreams. Morris has to be next up from the college ranks.

Guessing Frost and Morris don't whack off to 16-play, 70 yard drives that take an entire quarter, so that's not going to happen

So Pep it is!

Spoiler:
butnahhh Pep's awful

Scott Frost, really? I have the impression even Oregon fans aren't all in on him. Nowhere near enough experience for Michigan to hire him. (I can't see that being a smart hire for any team really, we have any notion that he's got his own ability outside of the people he's worked for?)

Hoke's a dog to get fired anyway imo.

Why would anybody wish Del Rio on their team?

I think A&M(or maybe Michigan, etc.) is the tier of program he can aim for. Why dawdle around at SMU, the only thing he can go there is fail and then really have to work his way back into power conference HC talk. He can skip that step entirely in a year or two.

You don't make 1.3M or whatever as an ACC OC just for giggles, I have to assume Clemson gave him that raise to fend off MAC/Sunbelt level HC job offers, and that was a few years ago. Dude was coaching high school in like 2009.

Unless your AD gets fired, I don't know about any of those guys. He'll probably offer the job to Dan Dierdorf.
