I was kinda hoping to go McGary/Harris at the turn.. whoops

I'll take Patric Young and Russ Smith, instead. Young is a beast down low defensively and on the boards. Russ Smith is dumb sometimes but he made a huge jump last year and was one of the best offensive players in the country.

Okay Im on my phone but im gonna take PJ Hairston. Doesnt look like he actually did anything serious and the buzz is that he'll be back for Kentucky on December 14th, and if not then definitely for the important games.

Also he's a known absolute baller.

Thanks Assani

Pretty happy to have the front court I have so far. GR3 is a bit undersized and kind of scoots into the SG role sometimes but I think it's worth it. Dude is almost 100% NBA ready with a small amount of issues to work on such as just outside shot/FT. I think he'll be an elite defender this year as well as a great creator on the drive. Hopefully his outside shot will start supporting that. He's one of the few guys in this draft that is both a proven college player and a future lottery pick which makes him great for this league.

GR3 never played SG last year. He played the majority of his time at the 4, the rest of his time at the 3.

I don't know what I was thinking. I somehow envision him as a small 3. Maybe I'm just getting confused. He's gonna play like 0 min at the 4 in this league I would think.

I think he's perfectly suited to play the 3 in this league. His rebounding numbers aren't anything special, but I think he is a terrific rebounder for someone who was forced to play out of position at the 4. He would have a lot more opportunities at the 3 against a smaller opponent.

His defense is pretty up in the air at this point. He struggled a lot last year because he had to guard bigger PFs, he has all the tools to be a good defender but we just don't know enough about his defense at this point.

PJ, i might have taken him 6th overall if i knew he wasn't going to miss time

McGary could be a top offensive player this year if he can get his FT% up around 70%, obviously it was atrocious last year.

Not sure what to think about his defense, he struggled with positioning last year and was unreliable for most of the year but improved during Michigan's tourney run. He hustles every play, is an exceptional rebounder, pretty up in the air how his defense will improve from last year to this year.

Hairston's numbers last year for a sophomore wing are basically unprecedented:

PER 27.1
TS 58.6%
27.0 USG
8.4 OREB %

Compared to say (from recent years):

Sophomore Victor Oladipo:

20.5 PER
.546 TS%
23.2 USG
8.7 Oreb %

Sophomore Harrison Barnes

21.2 PER
52.8 TS%
28.1 USG
6.9 Oreb %

The only real sophomore wing I can find that was better is James Harden. Danny Granger had great sophomore numbers too but in the Missouri Valley. Obviously this is partly because the really good guys leave after a year but as this is an NCAA draft...

Partial caveat is that Hairston only played 23 minutes a game last year so numbers may be partially skewed but surely not that much and really just lolroy.

My point is that if Hairston plays (seems he will play a lot. Miss maybe 10-12 games or so.) we should expect him to be on a level above the competition.

fwiw DX released their mcgary video today

looks like he hustles and does some things well on D but he's not much of a rim protector and doesn't have the quicks to guard 4's, which kind of caps the upside of any defensive unit he is a part of.

PS: watch from 14:40 to 14:50 of the video for maximum lulz

pbal, hairston only played 23 mpg because roy is a friggin moron and took forever to realize he was a mega baller. he balled hard when his role was elevated to 30+ down the stretch and consequently turned UNC's season around

may as well share this video while we're on the topic:

yeah, you gotta run to take full advantage of McGary imo. His team has the potential to be the most fun to watch in this draft though.

I'll take Isaiah Austin (Sophomore Forward), Baylor.

Additionally, he has good instincts as an offensive rebounder, having the wingspan, hands and agility to go out of his area on a regular basis and secure his team extra possessions.

On the perimeter, Austin has the ability to knock down shots with range out to about 18 feet, as well as solid ball-handling skills for a player his size.

Defensively, Austin is an incredible presence inside the paint with his combination of length and mobility, being extremely difficult to shoot over when rotating from the weak-side when dialed in. He blocks and alters plenty of shots both on and off the ball, which will make him a commodity throughout his career at the center position.
Averaged 13.9/8.5 his freshman year per 30 minutes

plox source your quotes and put them in some sort of quote format.

I thought about him but seems raw and more of an NBA prospect than a NCAA one.

yeah austin is definitely a variance pick. he would need to make a huge leap forward to be worth the slot but it seems he has the talent for it so i can't hate too much.

i do not think he was particularly good as a freshman

Is 33% shooting at 3 from your 5 even an asset? Just curious in general. In the NBA I don't even know if you want him shooting it. Better than GR3!

i'd say it's an asset if you have a 4 who can score in the paint but otherwise lacks range, but overall not that valuable

I think it's more of an asset in the NBA vs. better/more athletic defenses. In college, you mostly want your huge/talented dudes close to the basket/cutting/rolling in the PnR to get easy baskets and orebs. Plus most big men aren't actually great outside shooters in college.

Austin shot <50% on 2s last year. That's awful from an athletic 7-footer in college.
