NBA Season Thread 2016-2017 NBA Season Thread 2016-2017

I want to let kc know that his tears are still delicious. Which thread is he more likely to read? I fell backwards out of my recliner yesterday when Ulis hit that shot but was too lazy to post.

It seems my NBA interest over the years seems to wax and wane with the fortune of the Suns. Unfortunately as long as Sarver has any say I am not confident that there will be another heyday any time soon. Then again, I'm also less not confident than I used to be. We'll see.

But on Friday I went to a game for the first time in years due to their inducting the announcer since the early 70's into their "ring of honor". I was pleasantly surprised at how hard they played, perhaps partly due to their being no apparent set rotation so nearly everyone is playing for PT. Little-used Derrick Jones Jr. got into a dustup with Westbrook and got a standing O for his efforts when he checked out. Although if they're vetting for the future I'm not sure why they bother to play gummers like Barbosa and Dudley, but at least they provide a whiff of when the team was good (and they weren't fat). So I watched again yesterday and was rewarded in turn.

Also, last week I sat next to Tom Chambers at a lunch for the announcer. I'd never spoken with him before. He's in the ring of honor too and there was a picture of him hanging up in the room where we ate. I told him a better picture would have been the one where he TEABAGGED Mark Jackson. Chambers was like hey-oooooooooooo, now there's a word I can't use on the air...

I think it would be beneficial to merge the threads back together next year. For the simple fact that SE is objectively dying and having it all in one place is better than two. It being separated this year isn't killing anything tho

Anyway, I'm not really sure what we're arguing. The original point seemed to be that a ton of players (someone said Jamal ****ing Crawford) could do what IT2 is doing, which seems ridiculous to me. How much better can we expect the Celtics to be? Like I said before, they're obviously deep with role players who are willing to play within the system and extremely well coached, but at the end of the day they're a top ~7 team in the league and their top 7 minutes getters aside from IT2 are Avery Bradley, Al Horford, Marcus Smart, Jae Crowder, Amir Johnson, Kelly Olynyk, and Terry Rozier.

I know Boston fans love to hype up their role players but that team has no business contending for a 1 seed. To me that says two things, Brad Stevens is a great coach getting the most out of his players, and IT2 has been terrific this year.
Who would you rather have this season (for both Cavs/Celtics and then any other team) Kyrie or IT2?
03-06-2017 , 09:34 PM
Kyrie in any situation
03-06-2017 , 09:42 PM
I prefer Kyrie slightly to IT2. Kyrie has 1300 boss playoff minutes last two seasons. Seems like IT2 can be more subject to getting "solved" and exploited in the playoffs.

Talking the GOAT dunk at lunch with the dunker would be great.

I guess POR now has an added back to back because of LOL MIN and their ice problems. Eighth seed race in the west might be medium interesting to watch.

So Bill Laimbeer was on commentary for a bit during the Bulls/Pistons yapping away like he was reading from a twog manuscript. One of his main points was that basketball "isn't 5v5 anymore it's 2v2" and it occurred to me how backwards that is. Scheming in today's game is so much more difficult bc you have so much more action off the ball and the shooting is so much better. Back in the day if you were smart you could basically just pack it in bc shooters were both worse and less willing. I think what he's saying would be a lot more applicable in the mid-2000's when there was a lot more iso'ing in the midrange and basic p&r, but the schemes have become a lot more intricate more recently.

So of course as I listened the bitter ******* on me thought about how this is something you can't actually say, how any casual would laugh at you for thinking you possibly knew as much as a legend like Laimbeer. I went and watched a bunch of Pistons clips from the Bad Boys era to see what it was like, and of course it was just brutal- zero complexity or anything. Sure it wasn't a basic p&r, there was some ball movement, but certainly not ball movement with purpose, just pass it around while we wait to setup our single transparent action.

So I guess I'll ask, are olds just egomaniacs who don't want to admit that they played in an inferior era or just dumb?

Ah. I'm not sure I ever really cared about this subject one way or the other, but the slow leak of users (which I assume is the fault of BF and the decline of online poker domestically as anything the site is doing wrong) presumably makes two threads unnecessary at some point.

Pretty sure Laimbeer made up his mind about "current" NBA about 10 years ago and hasn't bothered to pay attention to what actually goes on, or he just doesn't care to understand it, or he doesn't want to believe his assumptions might be wrong. Either way I also heard his comments and was wondering what game he's been watching.

Most former players don't know much, I have heard Laimbeer say guys are bigger and stronger now and that LeBron would dominate if he played in his era though.

Downside to LeBron never being injured is that his team mates are always injured.

I know that I do most of my discussion with people on twitter now because any time I do bring things like that up in here, they get glossed over in favor of the same discussions over and over again.

But I'm sure that a bunch of low content posts during games will fix that.
This is correct in every way.

He's been too busy coaching the WNBA instead of the NBA because he's been blacklisted all this time for being a major POS during his playing days.

He just stopped posting afaik. A few months ago I checked to see if he was still making videos and I believe he had stopped.
