Also, something funny about the Warriors. The first year I started paying attention to basketball standings, I had to be like 6 or 7 I think...I seen that the Pistons/Warriors both started out 5-2 or something....So whenever Id shoot around in the backyard then id image a Pistons/Warriors finals.

Cool story I know.

in baseball i know that players can run insane over half a season or hell even a whole season in some areas....i assume that isn't possible in basketball?
There is significantly less year-to-year variation in NBA than in MLB. Barring massive situational/role change, it's extraordinarily improbable that a player goes from high usage, awful efficiency to high usage, elite efficiency.

So Bron has led the league in PER for the last few years...Is his PER going to drop because he has wade/bosh or can he have the same PER while doing less?

basically is PER inflated for stat whores

extenuating circumstances in montas case. ofc hes not gonna have 27 per and 622 ts. but i think 560 ts and 20 per is very reasonable.

Yes.

So by looking back at PER leaders from the past....and factoring in competition faced, I see a top 4 all time of:

1. bron
2. shaq
3. jordan
4. wilt

seem right?

For example, I would argue that Iverson was better (less negative?) at age 32 in Denver than he was at age 30 in Philly - but if you look at his PER, it divebombed.

PER is a nice way to aggregate box score stats. IMO, it is a poor way to evaluate/compare players.

jordan has better per than lebron

tend to agree.

anyway, per is generally laughed at in this thread. see iggy.

Since when is PER generally laughed at? It seems like, as IH said, it has some value. Surely its not any more laughable than most bball stats?
11-06-2010 , 04:19 AM
huh? do you just skip over all the sort by per jokes?

In other words, you're agreeing that Kobe was the best player in the league. Thanks for settling it for us!

how would "sort by points per game" be any different?

agre with victor

imo even the people who hate on monta the most would readily admit that he's capable of being a useful player because he has actually been one before. but last yr was probably the perfect storm of a young player thinking he's better than he is, a bad coach willing to let him do whatever (and give him all the minutes he likes) and no one else on the team with the clout to really say much

i don't think it's much of a surprise at all if he's more efficient this yr. obv won't keep up the current pace but there's some clear factors that should reign in some of the things that hurt his value last yr
11-06-2010 , 04:52 AM
im really interested in weird career paths for players. i.e. players who seem to of peaked at 23-25...but then from like 31-35 have their best years? kidd obv seems to have a weird career path as he suddenly has a 3 and doesn't seem to be declining much at all.

the years don't quite matchup but Billups comes to mind. Wasn't he basically unwanted by a great number of teams before coming to detroit?
11-06-2010 , 04:56 AM
billups was largely considered one of the biggest busts until detroit. good on him.

grant hill has a weird path but obv it was due to injury. proly many others like him.

channing frye has a weird path. he was marked as an up and comer then a whatever ankle injury and he got buried on the bench in ny then he went to portland where they had a ton of bigs. seems he can salvage in phoenix.

caron butler

rip hamilton

ben wallace
11-06-2010 , 05:06 AM
why is rips path weird? seems like he was really good from 04-07 and has been declining lately? was he just that bad in wsh?
11-06-2010 , 05:11 AM
just looked at rips stats...the only weird thing i can see is that it seems like he's been pretty much the same player his whole career...no "peak" if u will.
