Those Laker teams pushed the ball from one end of the floor to other better than any team I have ever seen. Magic Johnson probed the defense, in transition, looking for immediate at the rim finishes for players like Michael Cooper and James Worthy.

When those finishes weren't there - he, as well as any point guard I have seen, was then able to immediately reset the offense and work the half court offense sets that were enhanced by the presence of one of the most dominate half court offensive presences in the history of the game - Kareem Abdul Jabbar.

The collective basketball IQ of that team was genius level. Every once in a while, statistics are simply not be all, end all revelations.

i don't agree. the value of the best offensive players comes in the halfcourt. that's not to say that you should seek to walk the ball up the court on every play. additionally the implicit assumption here is that the cavs can run a lot more and still play the same caliber of defense that they currently do which is nowhere close to a given. if he goes to the knicks and breaks the scoreboards w/dantoni and they don't win then public opinion will cry out about how they need to slow down so they can play better d. grass is always greener.

On pace: I'm finally going to say it - I don't care what the statistics say.

The Los Angeles Lakers of 1984, 1985, 1987, 1988, and 1989 were the best transition teams in the league in each of those years. Those teams demoralized opponents by blasting them with with transition basket after transition basket. Without even looking it up, I'm sure Denver played a statistically faster pace - but, they were in no way a better transition team than the Showtime Lakers.

Los Angeles lost to Boston in 1984 simply because Boston was more physical and more prepared to play tong war defense. Los Angeles learned from that series and added physicality to their mix and never again lost to Boston - or
any other team in the finals - until age began breaking them down.

I hated, and still hate, those Lakers teams and provide them with compliments only through clenched teeth - but, they were what they were.

I just wished they had showed up to take their beating in 1986 the same way Boston did in 1987.
i mean you can say w/e you want, but that doesn't make it true. if the lakers ran "as much as any other team" they would have at least as many possessions per game as any other team. they did not, thus they did not run as much as any other team. there is not much of an argument against this other than it not meshing w/the popularized version of the history

edit: where are all the shots/possessions if they were truly running so much? perhaps they were just extremely efficient relative to the rest of the league in their ability to convert transition opportunities. that would make them a good transition team, but that is a distinct point from running often

I didn't say that stats were the be all end all revelation. I said that if you believe something about a team and it is true, then there is enough data available that you should be able to statistically prove it in some way. If you are unable to do this, then I very much doubt you are correct.
