Made the first “big three” thing happen and delivered a Championship from nowhere. Had the sense to hire Stevens. Did the big trade with the crazy Russian. Ruthlessly sold Cleveland the corpse of Isaiah Thomas.

This combination didn’t quite workout but injuries killed them a little bit.

He’s definitely smart, but they are as far away from a title now as they have been in a long time. Interesting to see what he does.

Ainge is competent, his draft scouting has been pretty awful though. He's definitely >> than 10 GMs and slightly better/slightly worse than about 12-15 and way behind the top front offices

Kawhi going to LA has been an open secret. It’s why pop had to settle for a Derozan. Sure there was some chance Kawhi would commit out of love for Toronto* and their success, but without it happening during parade and with him taking meetings, it seems like the plan that’s been in place for a year will be the one that happens - he’s going to be a clipper.
Unsure if this is sarcasm, trolling, or you're in super denial.

He's re-signing in Toronto >95% of the time. The only question is whether it's a 1+1, a 2+1, or a 4+1. For that, I don't think he's made his mind up yet.

Also why not Durant to Boston? Seems like a good situation all around if KD wants to leave.

This is a good sleeper team. They came in second last time he was a free agent and the situation looks better now than before.

Via sign and trade right?

Durant for Hayward and when Stevens tells Ainge he misses Hayward then Ainge can tell him to **** off?

I dunno if Ainge is a good drafter or not but he’s only had 5 top ten picks in his life. Two he traded immediately, one for Ray Allen, and the other three are key members of the current team who may or may not make an all star team in the near future. I’m going to hold off on slamming his drafting ability when he consistently picks in the late teens and early 20s and has had some guys with decent careers.

I used to have a Danny Ainge baseball card when he played for the Toronto Bluejays. If you realize he is North he is super duper smart.

I have pokered with Russ many times. He's a great guy and definitely there to give away some money while hanging out. What does he care if he spews 10k into your game? He makes 105k/day all 365 days of the year.

You like the measured taek that he’s 95% to stay? Taking meetings has historically been a bad sign, and while the national media is hit and miss, the consensus is Clippers (tho some will hedge with clippers max or Toronto 1 year)

The Bay Area isn't LA but I think it's up there and has been a pretty good place (outside of basketball relevance) for a while. Just like Chicago is a better location than Milwaukee, even though they are certainly less relevant basketball-wise today. More on that later.

Also, if we sorted teams by quality of management or assets 10 years ago, would the Warriors have ranked all that high? They had a different set of owners and management (who drafted Curry) back then. It's unclear that the management is all that responsible for their success either - drafting Curry/Klay/Draymond seems like dumb luck based on their draft positions. Extending Curry early and cheaply, which was also crucial, seems like a risky bet that worked out (for two reasons, one is that Curry became a superstar but the other is that the sport became lucrative and the salaries exploded) and it was kind of dumb luck (Curry's injury history up to that point) that option was available to them in the first place. The one move that was both great and had a high expected return was the Iguodala signing, but even that happened because the Warriors was his #1 destination, due to Iguodala liking Mark Jackson and also the "life-after-basketball" opportunities that exist in Silicon Valley [1].

None of these could've been foreseen based on anyone's evaluation their FO or ownership 10 years ago. It seems like the location did help. Beyond Iguodala, it's also possible that Curry would've risked RFA had he been drafted by a team in a worse location.

GS was not a desirable destination pre curry. San Francisco has always been an attractive destination so that didn’t change.

They ran hot with Harrison Barnes as well, deciding midway through the season to tank. Top 7 protected and they got the 7th pick.

Ainge drafted Jefferson 16th, T Allen 24th, Rondo 21st, Delonte 25th, Gerald Green 18th, Perk 28th, Avery Bradley 29th, Powe and Big Baby in the 2nd rd.....Some of these pieces were flipped for KG/Ray, others were rotation pieces on the title run teams.

The Celts don't get KG without his outside of the lottery drafting and don't build a 5yr contender that could've easily won 1-2 more rings had they run a little better w/ KG injury.

Almost every GM isn't as smart as they look at their peak but he has been very good at his job.

Recent criticism of Danny Ainge is shortsighted.

The Celtics underperformed expectations this past season after overperforming in 2016-17 and 2017-18. It's not something to be concerned about.

It's not certain why Kyrie Irving's run in Boston went badly. But, it seems Kyrie didn't get along with Ainge, Stephens, or most of his teammates. Based on the information that's been reported, I think Kyrie was the team's ailment. Kyrie walking away may be the medicine.

Ultimately, the Kyrie trade cost us the #8 pick in last year's draft (a Brooklyn pick). It was a risk worth taking that didn't pan out.

Losing Horford sucks for next year. But, he's older and not part of the long term plan.

The Celtics have good young players, cap space, and extra future draft picks. They should be a playoff team and eventual NBA championship contenders for the next decade.

As for Ainge, the Celtics hired him in May of 2003. Since then, the Celtics have:

1 NBA championship
2 Finals appearances (1-1)
5 Conference finals appearances (2-3)

How many NBA teams have been more successful over the past sixteen years? Just these five?

Golden State Warriors (3 Championships, 5 Finals appearances)
Miami Heat (3 Championships, 5 Finals appearances)
San Antonio Spurs (3 Championships, 4 Finals appearances)
Los Angeles Lakers (2 Championships, 4 Finals appearances)
Cleveland Cavaliers (1 Championship, 5 Finals appearances)

That's a short list.

The Detroit Pistons and Dallas Mavericks also have 1 Championship and 2 Finals appearances. And, the Toronto Raptors has their one Championship

Saying bad things about the Warriors management seems like a terrible take.

Not sure if they've made a mistake for 7+ years.

Looks like the league has expande TO 12. 2 new teams square off tonight BIVOUAC versus ENEMIES. Aliens and Triplets square off tomorrow
