The one for all the marbles. Bama vs. Texas. Two storied programs with a long history of success. I mostly lurk here, but figure it's about time I started a thread, and with my burnt orange glasses firmly on, here we go.

I can't write worth a crap or do it justice, but the guys at Barking Carnival Have some great write ups on the history between the teams:

What will Saban be up to?

Will the Heisman curse strike again? Not since 2004 has the Heisman winner won his bowl game. Will the snub of Colt McCoy drive him to have the game of his career?

Will Will Muschamp's defense be able to stop the vaunted Bama rushing attack?

Texas has scored more non-offensive touchdowns than anyone else this year. Are unexpected events have a big influence in the outcome of the game?

Matchups

Bama O vs Texas D

Texas brings one of the best defenses in the country to the game.

#1 Adjusted Defensive YPP Ratio: 0.666
Defensive YPP: 3.671
#1 in the NCAA in rush defense at 62 YPG
24th in passing at 188 YPG
#1 with 24 interceptions
#3 in total defense at 251 YPG
#8 in scoring defense at 15 PPG
#10 in pass efficiency defense

Led by Will Muschamp, who was Saban's defensive coordinator at LSU when they won the national championship, they typically play a base 4-3 with a nickel package in the pass happy big 12. Not only did Will work for Saban, but two years ago Texas running back coach and ex-QB Major Applewhite served as Saban's offensive coordinator at Alabama two years ago and should be able to give some insight to the defensive coaches.

Will is pretty feisty and is known in UT circles as coach Boom MF'r for this clip from when he was at Auburn.

Stars of the team include Sergio Kindle, a senior 6-4 / 255 DE/LB who will line up with a hand on the ground in passing situations, but will also play off the line. A projected first rounder, he is Texas best pass rusher. Probably best known for this shot against Taylor Potts in the Texas Tech game

The secondary is young but stout, led by all-american Earl Thomas, it also features hard hitting Aaron Williams, who will probably be tasked with trying to shut down Julio Jones. Here he is in last years Colorado game, when the kick off returner forgot to take a knee.

Bama's Offense

#9 Adjusted Offensive YPP Ratio: 1.199
Offensive YPP: 6.109
#12 rushing at 251 YPG
#83 passing at 197 YPG
#32 total at 413 YPG
#25 scoring at 31 PPG

In this match up I give Texas the edge. The Texas defense is similar to Tennessee defense which held the Alabama offense down. Depending on field position and turnovers I expect the Texas defense to hold them to 13-20 points.

Texas O vs Bama D

Texas brings a good, but schizo offense to the game. Texas tends to run up the score on lesser opponents, and then have trouble with the good defenses they face. The subject of Texas offensive coordinator Greg Davis is a sore one among Texas fans. He feels if we execute correctly we should succeed. Unfortunately, that means running the same plays over and over, and expecting different results.

We'll see great plays that gain 15 yards and never see them again, and see plays that lose yardage run over and over. The Bama defense has picked up on this already:

Rolando McClain, Alabama linebacker, all but called the Texas offense predictable on Sunday, although he tried to back off that claim after saying, "Sometimes I'm sitting there (watching Texas game tape) and saying, 'I know what's going to happen. I know what play they're going to run.' But I'm not saying they're predictable."

I think I speak for the entire Texas fan base when I hope Greg comes out of his shell and does some self scouting and turns some of our horizontal passing to outs and ups, and throws some misdirection into our offense. I'm not holding my breath, but I did hear Muschamp has spent a lot of time with Greg this month, explaining the theories behind Saban's defense, and the best types of plays to run against it.

The offense is led by Heisman finalist Colt McCoy. Very accurate and a threat to run, our offense goes as he goes. Our running backs are by committe, with Trey Newton a 6 foot 200 pound back expected to start. Our heavier back is 5-11, 250 pound Cody Johnson. Expect to see him around the goal line and in short yardage situations.

Our recievers are lead by all american Jordan Shipley. Number 84, Marquise Goodwin is a freshman with great speed and number 9 Malcolm Williams (6-3,220) has good size. I'm hoping they get used to stretch the defense deep. Number 11 James Kirkendoll (5-11,180) is our smaller shiftier WR. Colt doesn't throw to him much, and he drops a few balls, but is electric in the open field.

Texas Offense

#34 Adjusted Offensive YPP Ratio: 1.064
Offensive YPP: 5.677
#55 rushing offense 152 YPG
#18 passing offense 279 YPG
#3 scoring offense 41 PPG
#16 total offense 432 YPG

Bama Defense

#6 Adjusted Defensive YPP Ratio: 0.730
Defensive YPP: 4.246
#2 rush defense 78 YPG
#8 passing defense 163 TPG
#2 total defense 241 YPG
#2 scoring defense 11 PPG

I fully expect Greg to go into his shell and Texas to have a hard time moving the ball. I'm hoping we try some deep balls early to stretch out the defense, opening up our short passing and running later in the game. I really have no idea what to expect, but I will guess we score 14-24 points.

So overall I expect a game in the teens, with turnovers and kick returns playing a big role in determining the outcome. To me it all hinges on Greg Davis. If he goes into his shell, I expect to lose 20-17. If he comes out and we see new wrinkles in our offense I can see us winning 31-14.

Tom's predictor is pretty much in line with this, predicting a close Bama victory:

Predicting Alabama vs. Texas
YPP: 4.41 - 4.29
Final Score: 17.0 - 15.8

Anyone else going to the game?
My group will have a pretty big tailgate. PM for details.

If you told me Texas score right now I could tell you who wins.

<20 Bama wins
>30 Texas wins
20-30 toss up

Saban won't be up to anything, his teams play very machine like football.

Running game and solid low-risk passing game on offense.
Extremely physical and aggressive schemes on defense.
Solid all around on special teams.

The gameplan really doesn't change because it's very hard to beat if they're successful, they don't commit turnovers or get many penalties.

Texas is alot more explosive but also alot more prone to big mistakes, both on offense and defense

he's good at throwing screens and dumpoffs and letting his WRs inflate his number with YAC

Good writeup OP. I couldn't care either way so I guess I'll just root for Saban losing.

Pretty much the entire A&M game?

Yeah their defense is less prone to them than their offense though.

The whole A&M game was bizarre. According to a friend the aggies spent 1-2 days a week during the entire season preparing for Texas.

If you watched any of their other games, including the bowl game, you can tell they played out of their mind that game, hitting passes they don't normally, as well as their QB having the game of his career, throwing all kinds of balls into tight spots.

I look at the aggy game much like Bama's Auburn game. A rivalry game that was a little out of the norm for the rest of the season.
