Singer, Songwriter, Record Producer - Lionel Richie
We had a really tough time making this pick. There were at least ten people we were debating between. We eventually decided on Richie because of how many things he does for our studio. While there are definitely some better singers, better songwriters, and better producers out there, there isn't anyone that can do all three like Richie can.
His solo career produced five #1 singles in the 1980s and his stint with the Commodores was both successful and critically acclaimed. He's a member of the very exclusive >100 million records sold club.
We also like what he can bring to our studio as a producer. He'd work very well with Prince and some of the other R&B people are studio plans on getting.
Stable:
Eric Clapton
Ray Charles
Prince
John Fogerty (Creedence Clearwater Revival)
Mark Knopfler (Dire Straits)
Lionel Richie
So anyway, we picked Lionel Richie.
Just to add to TuT's write up. Richie is basically a ridiculous r&b pop cross over writer, producer, and singer. I think he's largely known for his solo career now, but the guy wrote a lot of songs for the Commodores. Some of which were their biggest hits.
Its no wonder the groups popularity plummeted once Richie left to pursue his solo career and make some of the hits TuT linked above.
Outside of his solo singing career, the guy wrote for, produced, and worked with a lot of people, especially several that have already been drafted. This includes: Marvin Gaye, Stevie Wonder, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, and Diana Ross.
To put things plainly, the guy pumps out hits loved by critics and the masses alike. Pretty sick value at this point if you ask me.
Primo rose up through his group Gang Starr, but really made his presence known in the hip-hop world on Nas's Illmatic. There, he crafted beats such as the haunting Memory Lane (above), the nostalgic Represent (which I believe sampled a song from a movie from like 1923), and the gritty New York State of Mind. Primo is known to sample jazzy and funky beats. His signature mark is the use of samples from songs the artist had previously put out.
Oh man Joni Mitchell is a great pick, but anytime I hear a cover of Big Yellow Taxi I want to rip my ears off. My grocery store has the bad habit of playing undrafted white dreadlocks version of the song every time I'm there, and it just makes me sad.
personally I think Premo is a better overall produce than Dre, but it doesn't matter too much now since Dye's the only one doing hip hop. I think he could probably lay some fat beats for Cube as well as a few other west coast MC's.
Yeah Primo was the only guy we had officially agreed upon for one of our upcoming double picks.
he could do some serious damage with some r&b singers, especially "classic" ones like Gaye and Redding. He would have been a good pick for your guys label, no doubt.
Man....hahahahahaha, its sooo tempting to start listing songs he produced, but they are filled with undrafteds. Not sure if that matters, but whatever. I'll just keep linking ones he produced with guys that have been picked, such as IMO Nas' best song.
I expect this to be a controversial pick, but I really feel this is sick value. Willie Nelson is a 10-time grammy award winner who has sold over 50 million records. Much like Johnny Cash, simply pigeonholing Nelson as a "country" artist is somewhat of a mistake.
Most of Nelson's fame and success came as part of the 'outlaw country' movement, where the artists followed the mold of famous rock groups and lived a rebellious, drug fueled lifestyle. This was the basis of much of the songwriting, which served as an opposite from the clean-cut image of country at the time.
The two pioneers of this movement, Nelson and Cash, actually formed an 'outlaw country' super group, The Highwaymen, and released a platinum album in the process.
I think he'll fit in well in terms of collaboration, especially w/ Jerry and Trey. But most importantly, he gives me one of the most successful and prolific 'country' artists of all-time, who has proven to be able to 'carry' a band to huge record sales and high levels of critical acclaim.
